Chapter 8 - THE CAMERA IN THE CLOCK

Daniel refused to let me enter the house without security.

Two guards met us at the gate.

Vanessa came too.

She said she needed to see this with her own eyes.

The house looked exactly as I had left it.

That was almost disturbing.

The roses were dead now.

The anniversary table remained set.

A faint wine stain marked the counter where someone had knocked over a glass during the chaos.

I walked toward the master bathroom.

The jacuzzi was empty.

The petals had dried against the porcelain.

I looked at the brass clock beside the sink.

It appeared ordinary.

Daniel put on gloves.

He lifted it.

A tiny lens sat between two decorative marks near the number twelve.

Vanessa whispered.

“Oh my God.”

We removed the memory card.

Then we found something else.

A second camera hidden inside the vent facing the doorway.

I stared at it.

Julian had wanted multiple angles.

They had planned to capture my face when I entered.

They had wanted my humiliation documented.

Back at Daniel’s office, the footage answered every remaining question.

The camera had been recording before I arrived.

Julian and Mia entered the bathroom together.

They were not romantic at first.

They were discussing timing.

Mia checked her phone.

“She should be back around seven.”

Julian poured wine.

“Make sure you’re crying when she comes in.”

Mia adjusted the strap of her robe.

“What if she doesn’t touch me?”

“Then scream.”

My hands shook.

On the recording, Mia looked uncertain.

“You really think she’ll hit me?”

Julian smiled.

“She won’t have to.”

He pointed toward the edge of the tub.

“You slip.”

Mia stared at him.

Julian continued.

“You hit your arm.”

“You say she shoved you.”

“She’ll be furious.”

“No one will question it.”

I felt Daniel move beside me.

He was angry now too.

The footage continued.

Mia asked,

“And then what?”

Julian drank his wine.

“Temporary restraining order.”

“Emergency asset motion.”

“Her board gets nervous.”

“My lawyers say she’s unstable.”

“Beatrice backs us.”

“And Grant handles the rest.”

Mia whispered,

“What about us?”

Julian kissed her.

“After this, we stop hiding.”

My stomach twisted.

Then Mia asked the question that destroyed whatever pity I still had for her.

“And the lilies?”

Julian glanced toward the camera.

“Only if we need another route.”

Daniel stopped the video.

The room became silent.

I could barely hear myself speak.

“What route?”

Daniel did not answer.

He did not need to.

We sent the footage to law enforcement.

By that afternoon, the entire legal posture changed.

This was no longer merely a divorce with financial misconduct.

There was evidence of fraud.

Staged accusations.

Unauthorized surveillance.

Possible identity theft.

And disturbing planning involving my severe allergy.

Julian called sixteen times.

I answered none.

Mia called twice.

I ignored her too.

Beatrice sent one message.

Please do not destroy this family.

I stared at it.

Then I typed back.

I didn’t.

Your son did.

I never sent it.

Some words did not need delivery.

By evening, Julian’s employer placed him on administrative leave after learning about the financial investigation.

Two banks froze related accounts.

Merrow Strategic Partners became the center of a formal inquiry.

Then Mia disappeared.

Her phone went dead.

She left Beatrice’s house before dawn.

Nobody knew where she had gone.

Julian immediately claimed I had threatened her.

But this time he had no audience ready to believe him.

Vanessa gave a statement about the forged documents.

Mark provided the security footage of Grant.

Robert confirmed what he had heard at the anniversary confrontation.

Beatrice refused to cooperate.

For forty-eight hours, we heard nothing from Mia.

Then I received an email from an unknown address.

No subject.

Only one sentence.

Julian lied to me too.

Attached was a photograph.

Mia standing beside a bus station.

In her hand was a small blue notebook.

The message beneath the photograph read:

May you like

This has everything Beatrice made me write about you.

I want protection.
