Chapter 13 - JULIAN CAME HOME

I did not open the gate.

I called security.

Then Daniel.

Julian stood beneath the camera with his hands visible.

He looked exhausted.

For the first time since this began, he did not look polished.

He looked like a man who had run out of rooms where people believed him.

He spoke into the intercom.

“Harper.”

I did not answer.

“I know you can hear me.”

Security arrived.

He did not resist.

He asked to speak with me.

Daniel told me I did not owe him that.

He was right.

But I wanted one thing.

Not closure.

Truth.

So I stood inside the glass doors with security between us.

Julian remained outside.

The gate stayed locked.

He looked at me for a long time.

“You look good.”

I almost laughed.

“Is that why you came?”

“No.”

He put his hands in his coat pockets.

Security immediately ordered him to remove them.

He did.

Even that seemed to humiliate him.

“I need help.”

There it was.

Not love.

Not apology.

Need.

“What kind?”

“Grant is lying.”

“So?”

“He’s making me responsible for everything.”

“You were responsible for enough.”

“Not all of it.”

“Then tell investigators.”

“They won’t listen.”

“They listened to me.”

His face tightened.

I watched him realize how complete the reversal had become.

Ten years earlier, I had changed my life because I believed his words.

Now his words could not even get him through my gate.

“Harper.”

His voice softened.

“I did love you.”

I felt nothing.

Maybe that was the final gift.

“I read the letter.”

His face changed.

“What letter?”

“The one you wrote Grant before we married.”

Silence.

I quoted it.

“Marriage protects my position better than any partnership contract.”

He looked away.

“I was young.”

“So was I.”

“I was ambitious.”

“So was I.”

“I made a terrible choice.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You made thousands of choices.”

He looked at me again.

“You think I never loved you because of one letter?”

“No.”

“I think you never understood that love without respect is just possession wearing perfume.”

He swallowed.

For once, Julian had no polished response.

I continued.

“You may have loved parts of me.”

“The woman who believed you.”

“The woman who paid.”

“The woman who made you look successful.”

“The woman who defended you.”

“But the moment my success became larger than your ego, you started trying to own what you couldn’t become.”

His eyes filled with anger.

There he was.

The real Julian.

“You always thought you were better than me.”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

“That was you.”

He stepped closer to the gate.

“You would have nothing if I hadn’t stayed while you built those spas.”

My voice remained calm.

“You helped paint the first one.”

His face hardened.

“I built your confidence.”

“You handed out flyers.”

“I sacrificed.”

“You had a salary.”

“I supported you.”

“And I was grateful.”

I looked at him.

“That was my mistake.”

His anger broke through completely.

“You think Mia matters?”

“No.”

“She was nothing.”

Behind me, Daniel had arrived.

He heard it.

I thought of Mia sitting in that conference room, admitting what she had done.

Julian continued.

“Beatrice means nothing either.”

I stared at him.

“Your mother?”

“She ruined everything by keeping those records.”

That was the moment I finally saw the full emptiness inside him.

Everyone became disposable eventually.

Wife.

Mistress.

Mother.

Partner.

Family was only useful while protecting Julian.

Daniel stepped beside me.

“You need to leave.”

Julian looked at him.

Then back at me.

“I can fix this.”

“No.”

“We could settle.”

“No.”

“I can give you information on Grant.”

“Give it to investigators.”

“I know where money is hidden.”

Daniel became alert.

“How much?”

Julian ignored him.

He looked only at me.

“Help me, and I’ll give it back.”

I almost admired the arrogance.

He was offering to return stolen money in exchange for rescue.

I stepped toward the glass.

“No, Julian.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re going to let them destroy me?”

I shook my head.

“You keep making the same mistake.”

“What?”

“You think every consequence in your life is something a woman did to you.”

I turned away.

Behind me, Julian shouted my name.

I did not look back.

Security escorted him from the property.

Later that afternoon, he surrendered through his attorney.

The hidden accounts he mentioned were eventually found anyway.

He had nothing left to trade.

Months passed.

The divorce moved toward final judgment.

Then the day arrived when Julian and I sat across from each other at one last table.

No family.

No jacuzzi.

No cameras hidden in clocks.

Only lawyers and paper.

Daniel slid the final settlement toward me.

I picked up the pen.

Julian stared at my hand.

“You’re really going to end ten years like this?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“You ended them in the jacuzzi.”

Then I signed my name.

May you like

My real signature.

For the first time in years, nobody else was using it.
