Chapter 12 - BEATRICE’S CHOICE

Beatrice was not arrested in the courtroom.
Life rarely delivers consequences with that kind of theatrical timing.
Instead, she was questioned.
Her records were requested.
Her communications with Julian were examined.
Her role became impossible to dismiss as maternal concern.
She had introduced Mia into my household knowing Mia had been recruited through Grant.
She had advised Julian to maintain the marriage while increasing his control over assets.
She had helped create the narrative that I was unstable.
She had stored documents.
She had participated in discussions surrounding signatures I never authorized.
But investigators found something unexpected.
Beatrice had also kept copies.
Of everything.
At first, that looked like caution.
Then it became leverage.
She had emails showing Julian lying to her.
He told her the financial documents were legal.
He told her I had agreed to certain transfers.
He told her Grant was handling ordinary tax planning.
He had manipulated his own mother too.
Not enough to make her innocent.
But enough to make the conspiracy uglier.
Beatrice asked to meet me.
Daniel advised against a private conversation.
We met in his office.
She looked smaller than she had at my anniversary.
No designer handbag.
No perfect hair.
No maternal authority.
Just a woman facing the remains of a family she had helped poison.
“I owe you an apology.”
I stared at her.
“You owe me more than that.”
“I know.”
She placed a folder on the table.
“I thought Julian deserved more.”
“More than what?”
“More respect.”
I laughed softly.
“He had respect.”
“From everyone except himself.”
That answer surprised me.
Beatrice looked down.
“When you became successful, he changed.”
“I noticed.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You noticed the arrogance.”
“I noticed the envy.”
That word sat between us.
She continued.
“He hated telling people the house came from your business.”
“He hated that your income passed his.”
“He hated hearing people call him Harper Caldwell’s husband.”
“So you blamed me.”
“Yes.”
At least she admitted it.
“I told myself you made him feel inferior.”
“You helped him become worse.”
“Yes.”
“Why Mia?”
Beatrice closed her eyes.
“Because I thought he would get it out of his system.”
I stared at her.
She looked ashamed.
“I thought if I controlled the affair, I could protect the marriage.”
“You protected the affair.”
“I know.”
“And helped him plan against me.”
“I know.”
My anger rose.
“You sat on my sofa and told the woman sleeping with my husband to act like my victim.”
Beatrice began crying.
“I know.”
I did not comfort her.
Some tears belong to the person who created them.
She pushed the folder toward me.
“Julian has another account.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside were statements from an offshore institution.
Large balances.
Payments from Merrow.
Transfers connected to loans taken against assets bearing my forged signature.
Daniel looked at Beatrice.
“Why are you giving us this now?”
She answered without looking at him.
“Because my son asked me yesterday to say Harper signed everything willingly.”
I almost laughed.
“So now that he wants you to lie under oath, you’ve discovered morality.”
Beatrice flinched.
“No.”
She looked directly at me.
“I discovered he would sacrifice me too.”
There it was.
Not redemption.
Self-preservation.
But sometimes self-preservation opens doors the truth can walk through.
The records helped trace nearly every missing dollar.
Within weeks, the fraudulent loans were challenged.
My business interests were separated from Julian’s hidden structures.
Merrow’s accounts were frozen.
Grant agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration regarding his own conduct.
Mia cooperated too.
The case tightened.
Then Julian did something none of us expected.
He disappeared.
He missed a scheduled deposition.
His phone was abandoned in a parking garage.
His personal account had been emptied days earlier.
Daniel called me at six in the morning.
“Harper, lock your doors.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“We think Julian is preparing to leave the country.”
I looked out the window.
A black sedan sat across the street.
Its lights were off.
Then my security system chimed.
Someone was at the back gate.
I opened the camera.
Julian stood outside.
May you like
Alone.
And he was smiling.
