Chapter 1 - THE FIRST GUEST ARRIVED

My anniversary party had begun.

Julian kept pounding on the bathroom door while I sat on the living room sofa listening to my phone explode with replies.

His sister, Vanessa, responded first.

“Wait, tonight?”

His uncle Robert sent three laughing emojis.

Beatrice wrote only one sentence.

“What are you doing, Harper?”

That message told me everything.

She knew.

Maybe not exactly what I had discovered tonight.

But she knew enough to be afraid.

I typed back.

“Come see.”

Then I put my phone face down.

Behind the locked bathroom door, Julian had stopped shouting.

That scared me more than the yelling.

Silence meant he was thinking.

Julian was always most dangerous when he had enough time to rearrange the truth.

A minute later, his voice came through the door.

Soft.

Controlled.

Almost loving.

“Harper, sweetheart.”

I stared toward the hallway.

“Open the door and let’s talk.”

I said nothing.

“We can fix this.”

Still nothing.

Then Mia started crying.

“Mrs. Caldwell, I’m sorry.”

Her voice trembled perfectly.

Too perfectly.

I remembered Beatrice’s advice from the hidden-camera recording.

Act like a victim.

Make Harper look cruel.

Even trapped in my jacuzzi, Mia was following the script.

Julian lowered his voice.

“She made a mistake.”

That almost made me laugh.

I stood and walked halfway down the hall.

“A mistake?”

He heard me.

Relief entered his voice immediately.

“Yes.”

I leaned against the wall.

“How many times does a mistake have to happen before it becomes a decision?”

Silence.

Then Julian tried another strategy.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand exactly enough.”

“Harper, she’s twenty.”

“So?”

“She’s confused.”

I looked toward the closed door.

“And you’re thirty-eight.”

He had no answer for that.

The doorbell rang.

Everything went quiet.

Julian whispered something to Mia.

I walked toward the front door.

When I opened it, Vanessa stood outside with her husband, Mark, holding a bottle of champagne.

Vanessa smiled.

“Happy anniversary!”

Then she noticed my face.

Her smile disappeared.

“What happened?”

I stepped aside.

“Come in.”

Mark looked past me toward the dining room.

The anniversary table was still untouched.

Candles burned low beside the roses.

The expensive wine remained unopened.

Vanessa frowned.

“Where’s Julian?”

A violent pound came from the bathroom.

“HARPER!”

Vanessa froze.

Mark slowly lowered the champagne bottle.

“What the hell?”

I closed the front door.

“Your brother is in the master bathroom.”

Vanessa blinked.

“Why is he locked in there?”

Another voice came from behind the door.

A woman’s voice.

“Please let us out!”

Vanessa’s face changed.

She knew Mia’s voice.

Everyone in the family did.

Mark looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Oh my God.”

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

The doorbell rang again.

This time it was Robert and his wife, Denise.

Then Julian’s cousin Evan arrived.

Then Beatrice’s younger sister.

Within twelve minutes, nine members of the Caldwell family were standing inside my living room.

Nobody understood why I had invited them.

Not yet.

Beatrice arrived last.

She stepped through the door wearing a navy coat and an expression that was much too calm.

She looked at me.

Then at the hallway.

Then at the anniversary table.

“Harper.”

I smiled.

“Beatrice.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Open that bathroom door.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“You knew?”

Beatrice ignored her.

“Harper, whatever you think you saw, humiliating your husband in front of his family is not how adults solve marital problems.”

There it was.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Defense.

Vanessa stared at her mother.

“Mom, what does that mean?”

Beatrice finally looked uncomfortable.

I walked to the center of the room.

“It means your mother knows exactly why Julian is behind that door.”

Every eye turned toward her.

Beatrice’s face hardened.

“That is a disgusting accusation.”

I pulled out my phone.

“Good.”

I unlocked the screen.

“Then you won’t mind hearing yourself explain it.”

For the first time that night, Beatrice lost her composure.

She stepped toward me.

“Harper.”

I pressed play.

Her own voice filled the living room.

“Men get bored.”

Nobody moved.

The recording continued.

“Harper makes the money.”

Vanessa slowly covered her mouth.

“Keep her happy.”

Beatrice went pale.

“Let her keep bringing money into this family.”

The pounding inside the bathroom stopped completely.

I watched Beatrice as the final part played.

“A few more years, and we can move things around.”

When the recording ended, the house felt different.

The family had not come to an anniversary celebration.

They had walked into a trial.

And Beatrice had just become my first witness.

She stared at me for several seconds.

Then she smiled.

It was small.

Cold.

Almost impressed.

“You think that recording protects you?”

I felt a warning move through me.

Beatrice reached into her purse.

“No, Harper.”

May you like

She placed a thick envelope on my dining table.

“It proves you have no idea what Julian has already done.”
