Chapter 6 - DOÑA ELVIRA KNEW

Exhibit Ten began with a voicemail.

Claudia had saved it for two years.

Doña Elvira’s voice filled the courtroom.

“You need to learn when to stop provoking your husband.”

Claudia’s recorded voice answered.

“He hurt me.”

A pause.

Then Elvira said the sentence Claudia would never forget.

“Then ask yourself what you did to make him lose control.”

Doña Elvira began shaking her head.

“That’s out of context.”

The recording continued.

“You have a good house.”

“A good life.”

“A successful husband.”

“Women destroy families because they think marriage should always feel comfortable.”

Claudia’s voice sounded smaller.

“What am I supposed to do?”

Elvira answered.

“Cover your arms.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Claudia looked at Elvira.

The older woman seemed smaller now.

Not remorseful.

Exposed.

“I was trying to save your marriage,” Elvira whispered.

Claudia shook her head.

“You were trying to save your son’s reputation.”

Elvira began crying again.

“He’s my child.”

“And I was someone’s child too.”

That silenced her.

Claudia thought of Elena.

Her mother had known something was wrong.

Mothers often did.

But Claudia had lied.

Again and again.

She said work was exhausting.

She said she had fallen.

She said Julián was under pressure.

She said everything was fine.

One night Elena had taken Claudia’s hands and said, “You don’t have to protect someone who makes you afraid to come home.”

Claudia had cried in her mother’s kitchen for almost an hour.

That was the night she began collecting evidence.

Not because she planned revenge.

Because she finally understood she might need proof to survive the truth.

Esteban moved to Exhibit Eleven.

Security footage from the Salvatierra residence.

Julián looked confused.

Then terrified.

The mansion’s main system had been under his control.

But Claudia had installed an independent camera in her home office after documents began disappearing.

The footage showed Julián entering.

Then Arturo.

Then Renata.

They searched Claudia’s desk.

They photographed documents.

And finally, Julián said something clearly enough for the camera microphone to capture.

“Once the divorce is filed, she loses access.”

Renata asked, “What if she fights?”

Julián smiled.

“She won’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because by then she’ll think she has nothing.”

Claudia watched Renata listening to her own voice.

The woman looked sick.

Maybe she finally understood what she had participated in.

Julián had not simply cheated on Claudia.

He had constructed an entire reality around her.

A reality in which everyone knew she was being robbed except her.

And yet he had made one mistake.

May you like

He believed isolation made Claudia powerless.

Instead, isolation made her observant.
