Chapter 11 - THE EMPIRE WITHOUT JULIÁN

The news broke before Claudia reached the courthouse steps.
Julián Salvatierra had been temporarily detained for questioning.
The investigation was expanding.
Reporters surrounded Claudia.
“Mrs. Rivera, are you seeking control of BioMed?”
“Did your husband steal the company?”
“Will you sue Renata Velasco?”
“Are you asking for criminal charges?”
Claudia stopped.
Microphones crowded around her.
She could have destroyed Julián publicly.
She could have called him every name she had whispered alone in the dark.
Instead she said one thing.
“I want the truth documented.”
Then she walked away.
The BioMed board summoned her the following morning.
The same men who had spent years calling her Julián’s wife suddenly called her Engineer Rivera.
Claudia noticed.
She remembered.
But she entered the boardroom anyway.
Twelve directors waited.
Samuel Ortega sat at the far end as an independent medical adviser.
An empty chair stood where Julián usually sat.
The chairman cleared his throat.
“We need stability.”
Claudia almost smiled.
For years they had told her she was too emotional for leadership.
Now they wanted her because the men in charge were frightened.
“We need you to return.”
Claudia looked around the table.
“Under what title?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Finally the chairman said, “Interim chief technical officer.”
Claudia stood.
“Then this meeting is over.”
“Claudia.”
She turned.
“You need my patents.”
Silence.
“You need my testimony.”
More silence.
“You need my credibility with the engineering teams and hospitals.”
She picked up her bag.
“But you still think I should return to the same corner Julián pushed me into.”
The chairman looked embarrassed.
“What do you want?”
Claudia faced him.
“Independent forensic audit.”
He nodded slowly.
“Full disclosure to affected investors and hospital clients.”
Another nod.
“Protection for employees who cooperate.”
The chairman wrote something down.
“And?”
“Executive authority to restructure compliance.”
He looked up.
“You want to become CEO.”
Claudia shook her head.
“No.”
That surprised them.
“I want the company repaired.”
She looked toward Julián’s empty chair.
“Then we can decide who deserves to lead it.”
May you like
Samuel smiled.
For the first time in months, Claudia did too.
