Chapter 13 - THE DAY JULIÁN TESTIFIED

Julián chose to testify.
His attorney advised against it.
He insisted.
Arrogance had survived everything else.
It survived suspension.
It survived investigation.
It survived Renata.
It survived seventeen exhibits.
Julián still believed he could speak his way out.
For the first twenty minutes, he almost did.
He was charming.
Controlled.
Reasonable.
He admitted mistakes.
He admitted the affair.
He admitted financial “irregularities.”
But he denied violence.
Denied forgery.
Denied intentionally stealing Claudia’s intellectual property.
Then Esteban stood for cross-examination.
“Mr. Salvatierra, did Claudia Rivera create the original sterilization monitoring prototype?”
“She contributed.”
“Did you design it?”
“We built the company together.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Julián shifted.
“No.”
“Did you write the original patent?”
“No.”
“Did you forge her signature?”
“No.”
“Did you instruct anyone else to reproduce it?”
“No.”
“Did you hurt your wife?”
“No.”
Claudia stared at him.
Not once did he look at her.
Esteban played the audio.
Look what you make me do.
Julián said the recording lacked context.
Esteban showed the medical records.
Julián said Claudia was accident-prone.
Esteban showed the photographs.
Julián said he couldn’t explain them.
Then Esteban played the newest voicemail.
Withdraw the corporate claims.
Take money.
If you take the company from me, I’ll make sure nobody remembers you as a victim.
The courtroom became silent.
Esteban walked closer.
“You sent that message?”
Julián hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Yesterday?”
“Yes.”
“While under investigation for intimidating Mrs. Rivera?”
Julián’s attorney closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Esteban returned to his table.
“No further questions.”
Julián looked toward Claudia.
Finally.
There was no apology in his eyes.
Only resentment.
And Claudia understood the final truth about her marriage.
She had spent years asking herself what she could have done differently.
Loved him differently.
Spoken differently.
Worked less.
Stayed quieter.
Been softer.
Been easier.
But none of those versions of Claudia would have saved the marriage.
Because Julián had never wanted a partner.
May you like
He wanted an audience.
And the moment Claudia stopped applauding, he decided she was the enemy.
