Chapter 9 - The Mother Who Ran

Margaret reached the front door before Kevin caught her.
He grabbed her arm.
She spun around and slapped him.
The sound echoed through the foyer.
Jordan and Justin watched from the staircase.
Kevin released her immediately.
Not because the slap hurt.
Because his sons were watching.
Margaret tried to open the door.
Detective Ruiz locked it from the security panel.
“You are not leaving.”
Margaret’s breath came quickly.
“I did not plant the necklace.”
Ruiz lifted the glove.
“Then explain the velvet fiber.”
“I touched the box after it was found.”
“You were not in the room when it was found,” the officer said.
Margaret looked toward Kevin.
“Daniel forced me.”
Kevin’s voice became empty.
“How?”
“He said he would release documents showing you approved the transfers.”
“I did not.”
“The signatures look real.”
“So you framed Annie.”
“I needed you to stop trusting her.”
“Why?”
“Because she was making the boys remember.”
Jordan descended one step.
“Grandma put the shiny box under Annie’s bed.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Kevin looked at his son.
“You saw her?”
Jordan nodded.
“She told Mrs. Bell to take us downstairs.”
“Then she went into Annie’s room.”
Mrs. Bell began crying near the hallway.
“It is true.”
Margaret turned on her.
“You ungrateful woman.”
Mrs. Bell flinched.
Kevin stepped between them.
“No more.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Daniel said Annie would destroy this family.”
Kevin’s expression hardened.
“Daniel destroyed this family because you kept helping him.”
“I was trying to save you.”
“You saved the company.”
“You saved the name.”
“You saved the man who threatened my wife.”
Kevin looked toward his sons.
“You did not save us.”
Ruiz placed Margaret under arrest for evidence tampering and child endangerment.
As the handcuffs closed around her wrists, Margaret began to shake.
“Daniel did not plan the crash.”
Kevin stared at her.
“How do you know?”
“Because he called me afterward.”
“When?”
“Before the police contacted you.”
The foyer became silent.
“He said there had been an accident.”
“He asked me to delete the security footage before investigators searched the house.”
Kevin stepped closer.
“How did he know about the crash before the police?”
Margaret started crying.
“I never asked.”
“You knew.”
“I did not want to know.”
“You knew.”
“I was afraid.”
Kevin looked at the woman who had taught him never to show weakness.
Now she appeared small.
Not innocent.
Only small.
Ruiz escorted her toward the door.
Margaret stopped beside Kevin.
“There is one more thing.”
He did not respond.
“Lauren called you from the car.”
Kevin’s face tightened.
“There was no call in the records.”
“Daniel deleted it from the company phone system.”
“What did she say?”
Margaret looked toward the twins.
“She said she had made a terrible mistake.”
Kevin’s heart pounded.
“What mistake?”
“She let Daniel into the SUV because he promised to return the stolen money.”
Kevin’s hands became cold.
Margaret continued.
“But he did not leave when she asked.”
Jordan suddenly covered his ears.
“The bridge,” he whispered.
Justin began crying.
“He got out at the bridge.”
Kevin crouched in front of them.
“What bridge?”
Jordan looked at Annie.
“The bridge with the red light.”
Annie’s face changed.
“There is an old toll camera near the Saw Mill overpass.”
Detective Ruiz pulled out her phone.
“That camera system was deactivated years ago.”
Annie looked at her.
“The public system was.”
“My aunt cleaned the toll office.”
“The maintenance cameras remained active.”
Ruiz searched the location.
Her eyes widened.
The camera archive belonged to Morrison Dynamics.

Kevin stared at the screen.
Daniel had controlled the footage from the beginning.
