Chapter 12 - Lauren’s Signature

Daniel was arrested for kidnapping, extortion, evidence destruction, and child endangerment.

He refused to discuss the crash.

He requested an attorney.

Before entering the police vehicle, he looked at Kevin.

“Check the signatures.”

Kevin did.

The backup drive contained hundreds of financial documents.

Every illegal transfer carried Kevin’s digital authorization.

Several also carried Lauren’s signature.

The federal investigators arrived that evening.

They froze Morrison Dynamics’ international accounts.

The board called an emergency meeting.

News outlets surrounded the mansion gates.

Headlines accused Kevin and his late wife of directing an eighty-four-million-dollar fraud scheme.

Annie found him alone in the library.

Lauren’s letter lay open beside him.

“The signatures are perfect,” Kevin said.

“Then they are copies.”

“They passed the first verification.”

“Daniel controlled the system.”

“I created the system.”

Annie sat across from him.

“That does not mean you created what he did with it.”

Kevin looked toward the dark window.

“My mother protected him.”

“My doctor drugged my children.”

“My best friend may have caused my wife’s death.”

“And my wife’s name is on every stolen dollar.”

Annie leaned forward.

“Lauren hid the records.”

“Why would she hide proof of her own crime?”

Kevin did not answer.

“She was gathering evidence,” Annie continued.

“She knew the signatures had been forged.”

“Then why did she not write that in the letter?”

“Maybe she did not have to.”

Annie picked up the letter.

She examined the final line.

Then she held it near the lamp.

A faint pattern appeared beneath Lauren’s handwriting.

“Lemon juice,” Annie said.

Kevin stared at her.

“My aunt used it to hide recipes from my cousins.”

Heat revealed another message.

The signatures are real.

Kevin’s face fell.

Annie continued warming the page.

More words appeared.

Daniel made Kevin sign blank authorization screens during board presentations.

He copied my signature from the foundation accounts.

The fraud depends on timestamps.

Compare them to the nursery camera.

Kevin stood.

“The nursery camera was disconnected after the twins were born.”

“Lauren may have reactivated it.”

They rushed upstairs.

Behind a shelf in the twins’ old nursery, they found a small recording unit.

The drive contained years of family videos.

Lauren reading bedtime stories.

The twins learning to walk.

Kevin asleep in a chair with both babies on his chest.

Annie watched him look away.

“You were here once.”

Kevin swallowed.

“Not enough.”

They searched the dates listed on the financial records.

On every major transfer date, nursery footage showed Kevin somewhere else.

At home.

Holding a child.

Reading a book.

Speaking on the phone while Daniel’s system registered Kevin approving transfers from corporate headquarters.

The timestamps proved the authorizations were fraudulent.

One video showed Lauren looking directly into the nursery camera.

She held a folder against her chest.

“If Kevin ever sees this, Daniel has already done something to me.”

Kevin’s knees weakened.

Lauren continued.

“The original transaction key is hidden where Jordan heard his first lullaby.”

Annie looked toward the antique rocking chair.

Kevin crossed the room.

Beneath the wooden seat was a sealed digital key.

Before he could remove it, every screen in the mansion turned on.

Daniel appeared in a live video feed from the police transport van.

A guard lay unconscious behind him.

Daniel held a gun.

He smiled at Kevin through the nursery monitor.
