Chapter 14 - The Final Recording

Kevin reached the mansion with Detective Ruiz and a federal tactical team.
The front door stood open.
One security guard was injured near the staircase.
He was conscious.
“Daniel took them into Lauren’s bedroom,” he whispered.
Kevin moved before the officers could stop him.
Ruiz caught his shoulder.
“You cannot go in there.”
“He wants me.”
“That is why you should not.”
“He also has my sons.”
Kevin removed his jacket.
He handed over his phone.
“Give me three minutes.”
Ruiz’s eyes hardened.
“Two.”
Kevin walked upstairs alone.
Lauren’s bedroom door was open.
Daniel stood near the window.
He held Justin against his side.
A gun rested beneath the boy’s chin.
Jordan sat on the bed beside Annie.
Annie had blood near her temple.
She remained conscious.
“Daddy,” Jordan whispered.
Kevin stopped.
Daniel smiled.
“You chose the company meeting over your children again.”
“I came back.”
“Fourteen months late.”
Kevin looked at Annie.
She gave the smallest possible nod toward the music box on the dresser.
The original backup drive remained inside.
“What do you want?” Kevin asked.
“The transaction key.”
“You cannot use it.”
“I can destroy it.”
“The federal agents already copied the records.”
Daniel’s smile faded.
Kevin continued.
“The board heard Lauren’s recording.”
“They saw the toll footage.”
“They know you were in the car.”
Daniel tightened his grip on Justin.
“I did not kill her.”
“You disabled the steering.”
“I wanted her to stop.”
“You threatened a mother with her children.”
“She was destroying everything.”
“She was exposing you.”
Daniel’s hand began to shake.
Justin closed his eyes.
Kevin forced his voice to remain calm.
“Let him go.”
Daniel looked toward Lauren’s portrait.
“She thought she was better than all of us.”
“No.”
Kevin stepped closer.
“She was braver.”
Daniel pointed the gun toward him.
Annie suddenly pushed Jordan off the far side of the bed.
At the same moment, Justin bit Daniel’s wrist.
Daniel shouted.
The gun moved away from the child.
Kevin lunged.
The weapon discharged into the ceiling.
Annie pulled Justin across the bed.
Kevin drove Daniel into the wall.
The gun fell.
Jordan grabbed it with both hands.
“No!” Annie shouted.
Jordan froze.
“Put it down, sweetheart.”
The boy lowered the weapon onto the carpet.
Ruiz and the tactical officers entered.
Daniel was pulled away from Kevin.
He continued shouting.
“It was an accident!”
“The truck caused the crash!”
“I only wanted to scare her!”
Ruiz placed him in handcuffs.
Kevin gathered both sons into his arms.
Annie sat beside them.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then the music box began playing.
The impact against the wall had activated a final recording.
Lauren’s voice filled the room.
“Kevin, if you are hearing this, I need you to listen without trying to fix anything.”
Kevin closed his eyes.
“I know you love us.”
“But sometimes you love us from a distance because distance feels safer.”
“You believe providing for people is the same as being present.”
“It is not.”
Jordan began crying.
Kevin held him tighter.
Lauren continued.
“If something happens to me, do not surround the boys with experts and disappear.”
“Sit with them when they are angry.”
“Stay when they push you away.”
“Let them see you grieve.”
“They do not need a perfect father.”
“They need a father who comes back.”
The recording ended.
Kevin bowed his head between his sons.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Justin touched his face.
“Are you going to work?”
Kevin looked at Annie.
Then he looked at both boys.
May you like
“No.”
“Not tonight.”
