Chapter 3 - THE EMPTY HALLWAY

“That’s impossible,” Roberto said. “My phone was with me.”

Vanessa gave a quick shrug. “Maybe it was a system error.”

Daniel didn’t answer. He tapped the screen and showed Roberto the device record. The alert had been opened from a second phone signed into Roberto’s account.

Roberto remembered giving Vanessa access months earlier so she could manage deliveries and household appointments. He had never thought about what else she could reach.

“Disconnect her device,” he told Daniel.

Vanessa’s expression hardened. “You’re embarrassing yourself.”

“I can live with that.”

“You’ll apologize when you calm down.”

“I’ll talk to you after I talk to my daughter.”

Roberto went upstairs. Sofía sat on her bed while María brushed her hair, counting the strokes aloud as she always did. When she heard Roberto, María put down the brush.

“Can I have a minute with her?” he asked.

María rose, but Sofía caught her sleeve. “Stay.”

Roberto sat beside them. “Okay. She stays.”

He waited until Sofía settled against him.

“Has Vanessa scared you before?”

Sofía picked at the rabbit’s loose ear. “Sometimes.”

“How?”

“She gets mad when I ask where things are. She says I should know by now.”

“You should always be able to ask.”

“She says that too, when people are here.”

Roberto closed his eyes.

María spoke carefully. “I tried to tell you last month. The morning after the fundraiser.”

He remembered that morning. María had asked for a private conversation. Vanessa had walked in before it began and said they were late for Sofía’s doctor’s appointment.

“I should have come back to you,” Roberto said.

“There’s more,” María replied. “Sofía fell in the study three weeks ago. The furniture had been moved. I found her crying beside the desk.”

Roberto had been told she tripped over a toy.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I did.” María’s voice broke. “Vanessa answered. She said you were in a meeting. Later she told me you knew.”

Roberto’s phone buzzed. A message from Daniel appeared.

Found local backup on the kitchen camera. You need to see this.

Roberto kissed Sofía’s forehead. “I’ll be right back.”

She held his wrist. “Dad? Don’t let María go.”

“I won’t.”

Downstairs, Daniel played the footage. At 6:12 p.m., Vanessa entered the kitchen and took a small black case from a drawer. At 6:14, she left through the staff corridor.

Daniel paused the frame.

Roberto recognized the case. It held Sofía’s emergency medication.

At 6:15, the security system went dark.
