Chapter 14 - HER OWN WORDS

The recording was made in Adrian’s car three months before Roberto came home early.
Adrian asked when Vanessa could get the trust documents signed.
“I need him to think I’m the only one who can handle her,” Vanessa replied.
“You said he already does.”
“He feels guilty. Give me time.”
Roberto listened with Claire and Harris. Vanessa spoke about Sofía as though the child were an obstacle on a schedule. She described encouraging Roberto to travel more and making sure María appeared unreliable.
Then she said, “Once he’s away, I can move the papers through.”
Harris stopped the recording.
Roberto stared at the silent speaker. He had missed María’s attempt to warn him. He had let Vanessa explain away Sofía’s fear. Hearing how deliberately she had used his guilt hurt more than hearing her insult him.
At the hearing, Vanessa’s attorney challenged Adrian’s account. Adrian had recorded her without telling her and had plenty of reason to shift blame. The prosecutor presented the recording alongside the documents, messages, and video from the study.
Roberto gave his statement. He described the evening he came home at 8:55, the raised hand, and Sofía’s fear that telling him the truth would cost María her job.
María spoke next. Her voice shook at first. By the end, she was looking straight ahead.
Vanessa accepted a plea agreement before the case went to trial. Adrian accepted one too. The forged transfer was voided, and Claire put new safeguards around Sofía’s trust. Roberto’s marriage ended.
None of it made Sofía’s bad dreams disappear overnight.
Some mornings she still asked whether the furniture had moved. Roberto walked through a room with her when she wanted to check. He began coming home in time for dinner several nights a week, and on the nights he couldn’t, he called before her bedtime.
One Friday, he brought home chocolate mousse again.
Sofía smelled it as soon as he entered the kitchen. “You got the good one.”
“I did.”
“Are you home early?”
Roberto checked the clock. “Five minutes.”
She grinned. “That’s not very early.”
“It was once.”
Sofía didn’t understand why he grew quiet. She held out her hand for the dessert box, and Roberto let her take it.

Later that night, she asked a question he had been waiting for.
“Dad, why didn’t you know she was mean to me?”
