Chapter 15 - COMING HOME

Roberto sat beside Sofía on the edge of her bed.
“Because I believed Vanessa when I should have listened to you and María,” he said.
Sofía ran her fingers along the rabbit’s worn ear. “You were at work.”
“I was. I should have made more time to find out how things were going here.”
“Were you mad at me when I spilled the glass?”
“No.”
“Even though it broke?”
“Even then.”
She leaned against his arm. Roberto stayed until she fell asleep, listening to the little changes in her breathing that told him she was comfortable.
Months passed. Sofía learned a new piece on the piano and insisted Roberto sit through every practice run. María took her first full vacation in years. While she was away, Sofía called her once to describe the garden and once to report that Roberto had nearly burned dinner.
Roberto changed his work schedule. Marcus took over more of the late meetings, and Roberto stopped treating every call as more urgent than home. Some weeks were still difficult. He told Sofía when he would be late and kept his word when he said he would call.
On Elena’s birthday, Roberto and Sofía went into the garden. The yellow roses had opened.
“Tell me what they look like today,” Sofía said.
He studied them. “A few petals are curling at the edges. This one has a spot of rain in the middle.”
Sofía touched the outside of the flower with one finger. “Mom liked them like that?”
“She liked them at every stage.”
They stood together for a while. Then Sofía asked if they could bring one inside for María.
Roberto cut a rose, and Sofía carried it carefully to the kitchen. María was there making lunch. She accepted it with a surprised smile and found a glass to hold it.
That evening, Roberto came home at nine. He heard Sofía playing the piano before he reached the front door. She missed a note, laughed, and started the phrase again. María called from the kitchen that dinner was ready.
Roberto opened the door and said, “I’m home.”
Sofía stopped playing. Her footsteps came quickly down the hall, sure of where the furniture stood.
May you like
“I know,” she said, reaching for his hand. “I heard you coming.”
