Chapter 11 - TWO STORIES

Vanessa blamed Adrian. Adrian blamed Vanessa.

Neither account matched all the evidence.

Claire laid out what they knew on Roberto’s dining table: copied signatures, access logs, messages, the study video, and the call recording. It was enough for the police to act, but Roberto wanted to understand how long the two of them had been working together.

Harris found the first link in old bank records. Vanessa and Adrian had known each other before she met Roberto. They had invested in a property venture that failed, leaving both heavily in debt.

“Did she approach me because of him?” Roberto asked.

Harris wouldn’t guess. “We have messages from early in your relationship. We’re reviewing them.”

Roberto remembered introducing Vanessa to Sofía. She had brought a soft toy, asked permission before touching the little girl’s hand, and listened while Sofía described the songs she liked. He had watched that afternoon and felt hopeful for the first time in years.

He went into the kitchen, where María was preparing lunch, and told her what Harris had found.

“She was patient at first,” María said. “With Sofía, I mean. I believed her too.”

That helped less than María intended, but Roberto thanked her.

Across town, Adrian spoke to Harris from his hospital bed. He admitted entering Roberto’s office with a false badge and helping prepare the forged documents. He claimed Vanessa had wanted control over the trust. Vanessa’s attorney said Adrian had pressured her because of their debt.

Harris found proof of the debt. She also found a message Vanessa had sent months earlier:

He trusts me. Give me more time.

Roberto read it twice.

That evening, he told Sofía that Vanessa had lied about the study and that adults were working to make sure she could not do it again.

Sofía sat very still. “I knew the desk was in the wrong place.”

“I know.”

“She said I was remembering it wrong.”

“You weren’t.”

Sofía leaned her head against him. “Will people believe María now?”

“Yes.”

The doorbell rang. Daniel went to answer it and returned with an older woman Roberto had never met. She introduced herself as Vanessa’s mother.

“I know I shouldn’t come without calling,” she said. “But there’s something you need to hear about the day of the crash.”
