Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER BURIED BEFORE BIRTH

No one moved.

Even Vincent lowered the gun slightly.

Luca stared at Rafe.

The resemblance had always been there.

The same dark eyes.

The same shape of the jaw.

The same controlled anger.

He had not seen it because he had never known to look.

Vincent recovered first.

“He is lying.”

Rafe stepped toward the scanner.

“The machine does not agree.”

“You are a thief’s son.”

“I was raised as one.”

Rafe’s voice hardened.

“That does not make it true.”

Luca looked at Emma.

“You knew.”

She shook her head.

“Elena suspected.”

“That is why she changed the vault key.”

Rafe placed his hand on the blood scanner.

The screen turned green.

Locks disengaged inside the steel door.

One after another.

The sound echoed through the basement.

Vincent’s face became empty.

The vault door opened three inches.

Rafe removed his hand.

“No one enters until Sophie is released.”

Vincent tightened his hold on her.

“You think blood makes you powerful?”

“No.”

Rafe looked at Luca.

“It makes me responsible for the same sins.”

Luca did not know whether he wanted to embrace him or kill him.

There was no time for either.

Vincent backed toward the vault.

He pulled Sophie with him.

Emma watched his feet.

Marco watched the gun.

Rafe watched Sophie.

Luca watched everything.

Sophie’s fingers moved near her waist.

Three.

Emma saw it.

She began counting with her eyes.

One.

Two.

Three.

Sophie dropped suddenly.

Vincent fired.

The bullet passed above her head.

Luca lunged.

He struck Vincent’s gun hand against the steel door.

Marco seized Sophie and pulled her away.

Rafe drove his shoulder into Vincent’s chest.

The older man fell backward into the vault.

His gun slid across the floor.

Emma kicked it away.

Luca followed Vincent inside.

The vault was larger than a bank office.

Shelves lined the walls.

Boxes held ledgers, hard drives, photographs, and sealed envelopes.

A television screen covered the far wall.

Vincent reached beneath his jacket.

Luca struck him before he could draw the second weapon.

The two men crashed into a table.

Vincent was older.

He was not weak.

He drove his thumb into Luca’s injured palm.

Luca grunted.

Vincent grabbed a metal case and slammed it against his face.

Blood ran from Luca’s eyebrow.

Vincent reached for the fallen gun.

Rafe stepped on his wrist.

Vincent looked up at him.

“You would choose him?”

Rafe’s face remained cold.

“I am choosing the dead.”

He kicked the gun toward Marco.

Luca pulled Vincent upright.

For years, Luca had imagined killing the person responsible for Elena’s death.

In those fantasies, there had been relief.

There was none now.

Only exhaustion.

“You do not deserve a quick death.”

Vincent smiled through blood.

“You still think this ends with me.”

The television screen turned on.

Elena appeared.

She was sitting inside the vault.

Her face was bruised.

Her eyes were clear.

Sophie stepped into the doorway.

She saw her mother.

Her entire body froze.

The recording began automatically.

“My name is Elena Moretti.”

“If this video is playing, the vault has recognized the Hale key and two members of the Moretti bloodline.”

Luca looked toward Emma.

“Hale key.”

Emma touched the tracker beneath her bandage.

The implanted capsule had activated the vault.

Elena continued.

“Vincent believes this vault contains evidence against him.”

“It does.”

“But it also contains evidence against Luca’s father.”

Luca looked at the shelves.

Elena’s voice remained steady.

“Antonio Moretti built his empire through murder, bribery, and fear.”

“He allowed Vincent to sell weapons through civilian ports.”

“He ordered the deaths of investigators, dockworkers, and families.”

“Among those families were the Calders.”

Rafe lowered his head.

“The child known as Rafe Calder survived.”

“His mother was Maria Bellini.”

“She was Antonio Moretti’s first wife.”

Luca looked at Rafe.

Elena continued.

“Antonio erased the marriage when he met Luca’s mother.”

“He allowed Maria and her son to be declared dead.”

“Years later, when Rafe’s adoptive father discovered Vincent’s crimes, Antonio ordered the entire Calder household killed.”

Rafe’s face did not change.

His hand trembled.

Sophie moved toward him.

She touched his wrist.

Rafe looked down.

She signed.

I am sorry.

He swallowed.

Elena continued.

“Rafe believed Luca knew.”

“He did not.”

“Luca inherited a criminal empire without understanding how much blood had built it.”

Vincent laughed from the floor.

“A convenient excuse.”

Luca looked at him.

Elena seemed to answer.

“I do not believe innocence comes from ignorance.”

“Luca must decide what to do with the truth.”

The screen changed.

Bank accounts appeared.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police officers.

Corporate executives.

Names filled the wall.

Marco stared.

“This could collapse half the city.”

Emma stepped closer.

“That was the point.”

Elena’s recording continued.

“The evidence has been copied to three secure locations.”

“If this vault is destroyed, every file will be released.”

Vincent’s face finally showed fear.

Luca noticed.

“What did you do?”

Vincent did not answer.

A red light began flashing above the vault door.

A countdown appeared on the screen.

08:00

Emma looked toward the ceiling.

“He planted explosives.”

Vincent smiled.

“I told you it would not end with me.”

Marco grabbed him.

“Where are they?”

“Every support column.”

“If the vault opens, the timer starts.”

Rafe looked at the steel door.

“Can it be stopped?”

Emma ran toward the control panel.

She inserted the memory chip again.

The screen demanded a password.

Luca searched through the boxes.

“Elena must have left a clue.”

Sophie looked at the video.

Her mother had stopped speaking.

The final image remained frozen.

Elena’s right hand rested against her chest.

Her fingers formed a sign.

Sophie stepped closer.

Home.

Emma saw it.

“The password is home.”

Luca entered the word.

The screen rejected it.

Sophie shook her head.

She signed again.

Not home.

The place where someone waits for you.

Luca looked at the frozen image of Elena.

A memory returned.

The night Sophie was born, Elena had placed the baby in his arms.

He had told her he was afraid to hold something so small.

Elena had smiled.

Then she had said one sentence.

“You are not her home because of this house.”

“You are her home because you always come back.”

Luca typed:

COME BACK

The countdown stopped.

Everyone exhaled.

Then the screen flashed.

SECOND PHRASE REQUIRED.

The timer resumed.

05:00

Vincent laughed.

“You never listened to her.”

Sophie stared at her mother’s frozen hand.

Then she signed toward Luca.

Mama used to say something before sleep.

Luca looked at her.

He did not know it.

The realization destroyed him.

Emma signed.

What did she say?

Sophie answered.

Even when you cannot hear me, my love will find you.

Luca typed the sentence.

The timer stopped at four minutes and twelve seconds.

The screen turned green.

EXPLOSIVE SEQUENCE DISABLED.

Vincent’s smile vanished.

Marco pulled him to his feet.

“It is over.”

“No.”

Vincent looked at Luca.

“You still have to choose.”

“Choose what?”

“The empire or the truth.”

Luca looked at the shelves.

“If you release those files, your companies collapse.”

“Your allies turn against you.”

“Your own men go to prison.”

“Your daughter loses everything.”

Sophie watched him.

Luca looked at her.

Then at Elena’s image.

He pressed the release command.

Marco stared.

“Luca.”

“Send every file to federal prosecutors.”

Vincent shouted.

“You fool.”

Luca turned toward him.

“You built power from fear.”

“My father protected it with blood.”

“I will not leave it to my daughter.”

A progress bar appeared.

UPLOAD: 12%

Vincent tore free from Marco.

He grabbed a hidden pistol from beneath the table.

He fired toward the control panel.

Rafe stepped in front of Luca.

The bullet struck him in the abdomen.

He fell.

Luca caught him.

Vincent fired again.

Emma pushed Sophie behind the vault door.

Marco shot Vincent in the shoulder.

Vincent staggered backward.

His hand struck a red switch on the wall.

The vault door began closing.

Emma was inside with Sophie.

Luca was outside with Rafe.

“Emma!”

She ran toward the narrowing gap.

The door slammed shut between them.

The upload stopped.

UPLOAD FAILED: 47%

Inside the vault, emergency lights turned red.

Sophie looked at Emma.

A new timer appeared.

OXYGEN RESERVE: 19 MINUTES

Outside, Luca pounded against the steel.

Vincent smiled from the floor.

May you like

“The vault can only be opened once.”
