Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIE

Rafe Calder stood beneath the hospital lights with a stolen gun aimed at Emma’s room.

Two Moretti guards lay motionless inside the elevator behind him.

Blood darkened the sleeve of his jacket.

His breathing was uneven.

His eyes were not.

“She did not come to save Sophie,” Rafe said.

“She came to finish what Elena started.”

Luca moved in front of the hospital-room door.

Marco reached slowly beneath his coat.

Rafe shifted the gun toward him.

“Do it, and the first bullet goes through the glass.”

Marco stopped.

Sophie stood beside the interpreter.

Her face was pale.

Her hands moved.

Why are you hurting Emma?

The interpreter translated.

Rafe looked at Sophie.

For one brief second, his expression softened.

“I am not here to hurt her.”

Luca’s voice turned cold.

“You aimed a gun at her.”

“I came to stop you from taking her.”

“She is unconscious.”

“And you are already investigating her.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“You know about the tracker.”

Rafe’s silence answered him.

Marco looked toward the evidence pouch in Luca’s hand.

“You implanted it.”

“No.”

Rafe lowered the gun slightly.

“Elena did.”

Sophie stared at him.

Luca did not move.

“My wife put military hardware inside Emma?”

“She had no choice.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Luca stepped forward.

“Yet somehow, my wife had an entire life I knew nothing about.”

Rafe laughed without humor.

“You knew the woman she allowed you to see.”

The words struck Luca like an insult.

Perhaps because they were true.

Rafe glanced at the hospital cameras.

“We have less than four minutes before Moretti security seals this floor.”

“This is Moretti security,” Marco said.

“No.”

Rafe nodded toward the elevator.

“Those men were wearing your uniforms.”

“They were not yours.”

Luca looked at the dead guards more carefully.

The jackets were correct.

The shoes were not.

Moretti security wore black leather soles.

These men wore tactical boots.

Marco understood at the same moment.

“Vincent’s men.”

Rafe raised the weapon toward the ceiling.

“I disarmed them after they tried to enter Emma’s room.”

“You killed them,” Marco said.

“They reached for their guns.”

Luca’s gaze remained fixed on Rafe.

“Why would Vincent want Emma dead?”

“Because Emma can identify the person who helped murder Elena.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“You said Vincent killed her.”

“He ordered it.”

Rafe’s eyes moved to Isabella.

“But someone else placed her inside the car.”

Isabella stopped breathing.

Rafe watched her carefully.

“You remember now?”

“I was not there.”

“That was not what I asked.”

Luca turned toward Isabella.

She backed away.

“I helped Elena escape.”

“You told us that,” Luca said.

Rafe’s voice sharpened.

“You opened the basement door.”

“You gave Elena a coat.”

“You handed her the keys.”

“And then you called Vincent.”

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

Rafe took one step closer.

“You called him from the kitchen phone.”

“I heard the recording.”

“You are lying.”

“You told Vincent which road she took.”

Isabella’s face crumpled.

“He had my brother.”

Luca closed his eyes for a moment.

The answer was always the same.

Fear.

Blackmail.

A threat.

Every person had a reason.

Elena was still dead.

Sophie watched Isabella.

The interpreter did not need to translate her expression.

“You betrayed her,” Luca said.

Isabella began crying.

“I thought Vincent only wanted the notebook.”

“He always wanted the notebook,” Rafe said.

“The murder was simply how he asked for it.”

Sophie moved toward Isabella.

Her hands shook.

Did Mama know?

The interpreter spoke softly.

“Did Elena know you called him?”

Isabella looked at Sophie.

“Yes.”

Sophie recoiled.

Isabella’s voice broke.

“She looked at me through the car window.”

“She knew.”

“She still told me to run.”

Sophie turned away.

Luca stared at Isabella with open disgust.

“You stood beside me at Elena’s funeral.”

“I know.”

“You held Sophie.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were helping us.”

“I was trying to make it right.”

“You tried to marry me.”

Isabella had no answer.

Rafe looked toward Emma’s room.

“Vincent knew Elena had built a second chain of evidence.”

“He knew Rafe was one part of it.”

“He knew Sophie was another.”

Luca’s voice lowered.

“And Emma?”

Rafe looked at him.

“Emma was the only one Vincent never found.”

A machine began beeping inside the hospital room.

Everyone turned.

Emma’s pulse monitor accelerated.

The nurse moved toward the door.

Rafe lifted the gun.

“No one goes inside.”

Luca stepped between them.

“Put the weapon down.”

“She may be waking.”

“She may be dying.”

The word silenced the corridor.

Luca’s expression became lethal.

“If Emma dies because you delayed that nurse, no story you tell will save you.”

Rafe looked through the glass.

Emma’s fingers twitched against the blanket.

The monitor continued its frantic alarm.

He lowered the gun.

The nurse rushed inside.

A second doctor followed.

Rafe allowed Marco to take the weapon.

Marco immediately pressed him against the wall.

Sophie watched through the glass.

Emma’s body jerked beneath the sheets.

The doctor adjusted her oxygen.

Another nurse injected medication into her IV.

The pulse monitor slowed.

Luca did not realize his hand was shaking until Sophie touched it.

Her fingers moved.

She is fighting.

Luca copied the sign.

Fighting.

The movement was clumsy.

Sophie understood.

Rafe was placed in a chair with his wrists bound behind him.

Marco stood over him.

“Start talking.”

Rafe looked at Sophie.

“Not in front of her.”

Sophie signed angrily.

Everyone says that before lying to me.

The interpreter translated.

Rafe looked ashamed.

Luca nodded once.

“She stays.”

Rafe leaned back against the chair.

“Emma Brooks was not her name when Elena met her.”

Luca waited.

“She was Emma Hale.”

“Her father was Colonel Daniel Hale.”

Marco’s expression changed.

“I know that name.”

“You should.”

Rafe looked at him.

“He ran covert surveillance for military intelligence.”

“He disappeared twelve years ago.”

“He did not disappear.”

Rafe’s voice hardened.

“Vincent killed him.”

Luca’s face remained still.

“Why?”

“Colonel Hale discovered Vincent was moving weapons through Moretti shipping routes.”

“Your father was still alive.”

“He protected Vincent.”

Luca looked away.

The sins of dead men were beginning to fill the corridor.

Rafe continued.

“Emma was twenty-two.”

“She had just finished nursing school.”

“She returned home and found her father dying.”

“He made her memorize account numbers, shipment dates, and names.”

“He told her to find Elena Moretti.”

“Why Elena?”

“Because Elena had already contacted him.”

“She was building a case against Vincent.”

Sophie stared at Rafe.

Her hands moved more slowly.

Emma knew Mama before I was born?

“No,” Rafe said after the interpreter translated.

“She met Elena when you were three.”

“Elena protected her.”

“She gave Emma a new name.”

“She hid her in Boston.”

Luca looked through the glass.

Emma seemed smaller beneath the hospital blankets.

“Why did Emma return now?”

“She did not return now.”

Rafe’s next words changed everything.

“She has been watching Sophie for three years.”

Luca turned sharply.

“What?”

“She worked at the bakery because Sophie’s school driver stopped there twice a week.”

“She knew the route.”

“She knew the guards.”

“She knew Sophie’s schedule.”

Marco stepped closer.

“So the crash was not the first time Emma saw her.”

“No.”

Luca’s anger rose.

“She lied.”

Rafe gave him a hard smile.

“She survived.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“To people like us, it usually is.”

Inside the room, Emma’s eyes opened.

Sophie saw first.

She pushed through the door before anyone could stop her.

The nurse tried to intervene.

Emma lifted one weak hand.

Sophie reached the bed.

Her fingers moved quickly.

You woke up.

Emma tried to smile.

Her voice was rough.

“I promised you hot chocolate.”

Sophie began crying.

Emma touched her cheek.

Then she saw Luca in the doorway.

She saw Rafe bound in the corridor.

Her expression changed.

“You found him.”

Luca entered.

“No.”

“He found us.”

Emma looked at the gun on the floor.

“Did he hurt anyone?”

“Two men are dead.”

“They were Vincent’s.”

“We know.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Luca stepped closer to the bed.

“Your name is Emma Hale.”

She opened her eyes again.

“Yes.”

“You knew Elena.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Sophie for three years.”

“Yes.”

Each answer was calm.

That made Luca angrier.

“You allowed my daughter to sit alone in that bakery while you pretended she was a stranger.”

Emma’s eyes flashed.

“I had no idea she would be there alone.”

“But you knew who she was.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

“So was I.”

Emma looked at him.

“No.”

“You were trying to keep her close.”

“There is a difference.”

Luca leaned over the bed.

“You do not get to judge me from a hospital room inside a life you entered under a false name.”

Emma’s voice weakened.

“I did not enter your life.”

“Your wife pulled me into it before she died.”

“Then tell me everything.”

Emma glanced at Sophie.

Luca saw the hesitation.

“She stays.”

Emma nodded.

“Elena believed someone inside your house was teaching Vincent your security patterns.”

“She believed your father had created a hidden account holding proof of Vincent’s crimes.”

“She called it the inheritance file.”

Luca frowned.

“My father left no hidden account.”

“He did.”

Emma looked toward Rafe.

“But the account could only be opened by two blood relatives.”

Luca understood slowly.

“Me and Sophie.”

“No.”

Emma’s answer chilled the room.

“You and Vincent.”

Rafe’s face changed.

Emma saw it.

“You did not know.”

“No.”

Rafe pulled against his restraints.

“Elena said the second key belonged to Luca’s daughter.”

“She lied to you.”

“Why?”

“To keep Vincent from killing Sophie.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“Where is the account?”

Emma looked toward Sophie.

“It is not an account.”

“It is a physical vault.”

“Where?”

“Elena never told me.”

“But she left Sophie a way to find it.”

Sophie’s eyes widened.

Emma raised her hand and signed carefully.

The red notebook is not evidence.

It is a map.

Luca turned toward the corridor.

Vincent had taken the original notebook from the bedroom.

Rafe looked down.

“If Vincent has it, he is already searching.”

Emma nodded.

“He will not find the vault without Sophie.”

Sophie looked confused.

Emma continued signing.

Your mother hid the final key inside something only you would recognize.

Sophie stared at her.

Then her face went white.

She reached toward the chain around her neck.

A tiny silver pendant hung beneath her hospital coat.

It was shaped like a bird.

Emma stopped breathing.

“Where did you get that?”

Sophie signed.

Mama put it on me before she died.

Luca lifted the pendant.

A thin seam ran along its edge.

Marco opened a pocketknife.

The pendant split in half.

Inside was a black memory chip.

Before anyone could touch it, every light in the hospital went dark.

The emergency generators did not start.

A voice came through the room’s speaker.

Vincent’s voice.

“Thank you, Sophie.”

“You just found the key for me.”

The glass window shattered.

A canister rolled across the floor.

White gas poured into the room.

Emma reached for Sophie.

Luca grabbed them both.

May you like

Then the world disappeared.
