Chapter 5 - THE BULLET THAT CHANGED THE EMPIRE

The warehouse erupted in gunfire.

Luca covered Emma’s body with his own.

Marco fired toward the catwalk.

Vincent disappeared behind a steel beam.

Rafe dragged Sophie toward the rear exit.

Sophie bit his wrist.

He cursed and loosened his grip.

She dropped to the floor.

Luca saw her.

“Marco!”

Marco ran.

Rafe raised his gun toward Sophie.

Luca fired first.

The bullet struck Rafe’s hand.

The weapon spun across the concrete.

Marco tackled him against a stack of wooden crates.

Sophie crawled toward Emma.

Her knees slid through the blood spreading across the floor.

She touched Emma’s face.

Emma did not respond.

Sophie began signing frantically.

Wake up.

Please wake up.

You promised hot chocolate.

Luca pressed both hands against Emma’s wound.

Blood forced its way between his fingers.

“Stay with me.”

Emma’s eyelids fluttered.

Her voice was barely audible.

“Did you get her?”

Luca looked toward Sophie.

“She is safe.”

Emma exhaled.

“Good.”

Her body went limp.

“No.”

Luca lifted her into his arms.

“No, you do not get to do that.”

He carried her toward the warehouse entrance.

“Open the road.”

Marco held Rafe against the floor.

“What about Vincent?”

Luca looked up at the empty catwalk.

A side door swung in the rain.

Vincent was gone.

“Find him.”

The trip to Moretti Medical Center took six minutes.

Luca’s convoy ignored every traffic light.

Police cruisers cleared intersections without asking questions.

Emma’s blood soaked Luca’s shirt.

Sophie sat beside him with both hands wrapped around Emma’s fingers.

She never looked away.

At the hospital entrance, surgeons were waiting.

They pulled Emma onto a gurney.

Luca followed.

A doctor blocked him.

“You cannot enter the operating room.”

“She saved my daughter.”

“I understand.”

“No.”

Luca grabbed the doctor’s coat.

“You do not understand.”

Sophie touched his arm.

Her hands moved.

Let them help her.

Luca released the doctor.

The surgical doors closed.

Red lights glowed above them.

Sophie sat in a chair outside the operating room.

Blood covered the front of her cream coat.

Emma’s blood.

Luca knelt before her.

He tried to sign.

His hands shook too badly.

Sophie watched him struggle.

Then she took his fingers and corrected them.

Together, they formed the sentence.

She will live.

Luca nodded.

He did not know whether he was promising Sophie or begging God.

Marco arrived twenty minutes later.

His knuckles were bruised.

“Rafe is secured downstairs.”

“Vincent?”

“He used an emergency boat beneath the pier.”

“Track every harbor camera.”

“We are.”

Luca looked at the operating-room doors.

“Who told Vincent about the exchange?”

Marco hesitated.

“Only twelve people knew.”

“Then one of those twelve belongs to him.”

Isabella approached from the far end of the corridor.

Two guards followed her.

Her green dress had been replaced by a black coat.

Her face was bare of makeup.

Luca stood.

“You should not be here.”

“I know where Vincent will go.”

Marco moved closer.

“Where?”

Isabella looked at Sophie.

“The house where Elena died.”

Luca’s expression sharpened.

“Elena died on the West Side Highway.”

“No.”

Isabella’s voice cracked.

“The crash was staged.”

Sophie watched her hands.

Isabella was not signing.

Emma was unconscious.

For the first time, Luca refused to let his daughter be excluded.

He turned to a young interpreter who had arrived from the hospital’s deaf-services department.

“Translate everything.”

Isabella looked ashamed.

“The house is in Cold Spring.”

“Vincent kept Elena there for two days.”

“He wanted the notebook.”

“She refused to tell him where it was.”

Luca’s face became pale.

“You knew.”

“I heard her screaming.”

Sophie looked away.

Luca stepped toward Isabella.

“You heard my wife being tortured.”

“I was twenty-four.”

“You were old enough to open a door.”

“Vincent threatened my family.”

Luca’s voice dropped.

“And so you let him murder mine.”

Isabella began crying.

“I helped Elena escape.”

“She stole a car.”

“She called you from the highway.”

“Vincent followed her.”

Luca remembered the final call.

Elena’s voice had been breathless.

She had told him she loved him.

She had told him to protect Sophie.

Then the line had gone dead.

He had believed the crash happened moments later.

Now he understood she had been running for her life.

“Why did you take her bracelet?”

Isabella wiped her face.

“She gave it to me before she escaped.”

“She said if she died, I had to give it to Sophie.”

“You wore it instead.”

“I was afraid Vincent would know I helped her.”

Sophie suddenly stood.

She signed toward the interpreter.

Ask her what Mama said about the debt.

The interpreter translated.

Isabella’s face changed.

“She said the debt began before Luca was born.”

Luca frowned.

“What debt?”

“Your father ordered the death of Rafe Calder’s family.”

Marco looked toward the elevator where Rafe was being held.

“Why?”

“Because Rafe’s father discovered Vincent was stealing from the Moretti organization.”

Luca understood the shape of it.

“My father killed an innocent family to protect Vincent.”

“Yes.”

“Rafe survived.”

“Yes.”

“And Elena found out.”

Isabella nodded.

“She promised Rafe she would expose everything.”

“But after she died, Rafe believed you had chosen the Moretti family over justice.”

“That is why he took Sophie.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“He used a child to punish a dead woman.”

“No.”

Isabella looked toward Sophie.

“He took her because he believed she had the only evidence left.”

The operating-room doors opened.

A surgeon stepped into the corridor.

Luca turned instantly.

“How is she?”

“The bullet passed through the upper shoulder.”

“It missed the major artery by less than an inch.”

Luca’s lungs finally released the breath he had been holding.

“She is alive?”

“She lost a great deal of blood.”

“But she is stable.”

Sophie covered her face.

Her shoulders shook with silent sobs.

Luca pulled her against him.

The surgeon continued.

“There is something else.”

Luca looked up.

“We found old surgical scarring near the wound.”

“Your friend has had a bullet removed before.”

Luca stared at him.

“That is impossible.”

“We also found a tracking capsule beneath the scar tissue.”

Marco stepped forward.

“A tracker?”

“It appears to have been implanted years ago.”

The surgeon handed him a sealed evidence pouch.

Inside was a tiny metal device.

A serial number had been etched across its surface.

Marco examined it.

His face darkened.

“This is military hardware.”

Luca looked through the glass panel.

Emma lay unconscious beneath white blankets.

Machines surrounded her.

The woman he had met less than twelve hours earlier had taken a bullet for him.

Now he learned someone had once put another bullet inside her.

“Find out who Emma Brooks really is.”

Sophie pulled away from him.

Her expression became angry.

She signed quickly.

The interpreter hesitated.

Luca turned.

“What did she say?”

The interpreter swallowed.

“She said Emma already told her.”

“Told her what?”

Sophie looked through the glass at Emma.

Then she formed the signs slowly enough that Luca could understand.

Emma knew Mama.

The corridor went silent.

Luca stared at his daughter.

Sophie continued.

Mama sent her to find me.

Behind them, the elevator doors opened.

Rafe Calder stepped into the corridor.

The guards beside him were dead.

He held a stolen gun.

He pointed it directly at Emma’s hospital room.

May you like

“She did not come to save Sophie,” Rafe said.

“She came to finish what Elena started.”
