Chapter 13 - WHEN THE WOLVES TURNED

Gabriel kept the gun against Luca’s chest.
“Tell me what she said.”
No one answered.
His eyes moved across the room.
The soldiers who had served him for years now watched the ring in his hand.
They knew what it contained.
Names.
Accounts.
Murders.
Proof.
Their loyalty had always depended on fear.
Now Gabriel held the one object that could destroy them all.
Luca looked at Marco.
Marco did not move.
Emma held Sophie close.
Rafe stood behind them with one hand pressed against his wound.
Gabriel’s voice sharpened.
“What did she say?”
Luca looked at Sophie.
Then he signed back.
You were right.
Sophie’s face strengthened.
Gabriel struck Luca across the face with the gun.
“Use your voice.”
Luca tasted blood.
“My daughter said you are afraid.”
Gabriel smiled.
“Of a child?”
“Of everyone in this room.”
Luca looked toward the soldiers.
“You built your authority on secrets.”
“Now they know you carry theirs against your skin.”
Gabriel’s grip tightened around the ring.
The nearest soldier stepped back.
Gabriel noticed.
“Daniel.”
The man froze.
“You have served me twenty years.”
Daniel looked at the ring.
“Then you know I reward loyalty.”
Luca laughed quietly.
Gabriel turned.
“What is amusing?”
“You murdered your own sister.”
“You ordered Vincent’s death when he became inconvenient.”
“You erased men who served you longer than Daniel.”
Luca looked at the soldier.
“He does not reward loyalty.”
“He delays punishment.”
A murmur moved through the room.
Gabriel raised his weapon toward Daniel.
The soldier fired first.
The bullet struck Gabriel’s forearm.
The wolf ring fell.
Chaos exploded.
Men turned their guns on one another.
Some fired toward Gabriel.
Others fired toward the doors.
Marco pulled Sophie and Emma behind a marble column.
Luca tackled Gabriel.
The two men crashed beneath Evelyn’s portrait.
Rafe reached the fallen ring.
A soldier aimed at him.
Emma saw it.
“Rafe!”
He turned too late.
The gun fired.
Marco struck the shooter’s arm.
The bullet tore across Rafe’s shoulder instead of his head.
Rafe fell beside the ring.
He closed his fist around it.
Gabriel drove a knee into Luca’s ribs.
Luca rolled away from a second strike.
Gabriel reached for the gun.
Luca kicked it beneath a table.
“You think this changes anything?” Gabriel shouted.
“The Wolves existed before you.”
“They will exist after you.”
Luca hit him.
“Not through my daughter.”
Gabriel pulled a knife from his boot.
He drove it toward Luca’s throat.
Luca caught his wrist.
The blade stopped inches from his skin.
Gabriel was older.
Rage made him strong.
Luca twisted.
The knife turned.
Gabriel’s eyes widened.
Luca could have driven it into his heart.
He did not.
He broke Gabriel’s wrist.
The knife fell.
Gabriel screamed.
Luca threw him against the floor.
“Marco!”
Marco moved through the crossfire.
Federal helicopters thundered overhead.
Emma had activated the emergency transmitter in Evelyn’s metal box.
Windows shattered inward.
Tactical teams entered from the balcony.
“Federal agents!”
“Drop your weapons!”
Several soldiers surrendered.
Others tried to escape.
Gunfire continued in the corridors.
Sophie crouched behind the column.
She watched Luca fight Gabriel.
Her hands moved against Emma’s arm.
Papa will kill him.
Emma looked at Luca’s face.
She saw the temptation.
Gabriel had killed his mother.
Destroyed his father.
Helped murder Elena.
Threatened Sophie.
Luca held the knife now.
Gabriel lay beneath him.
“Do it,” Gabriel whispered.
“Become what you are.”
Luca pressed the blade against Gabriel’s throat.
The room seemed to narrow around them.
Then Sophie stepped from behind the column.
“Luca!” Emma shouted.
Sophie walked into the open.
Her hands moved.
Papa.
Luca saw her.
She signed slowly.
Come back.
The knife stopped.
Gabriel smiled.
“He cannot.”
Sophie’s eyes remained on her father.
You promised.
Luca looked down at Gabriel.
All his life, men had taught him that mercy was weakness.
Elena had taught him mercy required more courage than violence.
Emma had demanded he prove it.
Sophie had trusted him to return.
Luca dropped the knife.
Federal agents rushed forward.
They pinned Gabriel to the floor.
He screamed as they restrained his broken wrist.
“You coward!”
Luca stood.
“No.”
He wiped blood from his mouth.
“I am simply finished becoming men like you.”
Sophie ran to him.
Luca dropped to his knees.
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
He held her with shaking hands.
Emma looked away.
Rafe collapsed.
Marco caught him.
“Medic!”
Emma ran.
Rafe’s face had gone pale.
His fingers remained closed around the wolf ring.
“Give me the ring,” Emma said.
He shook his head.
“Luca’s blood.”
“You are Luca’s brother.”
“Not the correct son.”
His breathing broke.
Luca carried Sophie toward them.
Rafe looked at him.
“You have to open it.”
Luca took the ring.
A tiny needle rested beneath the wolf’s silver jaw.
He pressed his thumb against it.
The ring clicked.
The wolf’s head opened.
Inside was a narrow data chip.
Marco placed it inside Evelyn’s recorder.
The screen filled with names.
Hundreds of them.
Government officials.
Business leaders.
Crime families.
Military officers.
Judges from three countries.
A live transmission icon flashed.
Emma looked at Luca.
“The ring is connected to an external server.”
Gabriel laughed from the floor.
“You release that list, and governments fall.”
“People die.”
“Markets collapse.”
“You cannot control what follows.”
Luca stared at the names.
He had already chosen truth once.
That decision had destroyed half his empire.
This one could destroy far more.
Sophie touched his arm.
What would Mama do?
Luca looked at Emma.
Emma did not answer for Elena.
“You are the one holding it.”
Luca watched the names scroll.
Some were guilty.
Some might be informants.
Some might be victims forced into service.
Releasing everything publicly could cause chaos.
Giving it only to one agency could allow another cover-up.
Rafe spoke weakly.
“Three copies.”
Luca looked down.
Rafe continued.
“One to federal prosecutors.”
“One to international courts.”
“One to the press.”
Marco nodded.
“No one group controls it.”
Emma looked at Rafe.
“That was Elena’s plan.”
Rafe almost smiled.
“She usually had better ideas than us.”
Luca activated the transfer.
Three progress bars appeared.
Gabriel struggled against the agents.
“No!”
The first file uploaded.
Then the second.
Then the third.
The Wolves’ secrets left the ring.
Every screen in the estate went black.
Gabriel stopped fighting.
His power had not been taken by a bullet.
It had been taken by exposure.
Rafe looked toward Luca.
“Now destroy it.”
Luca closed the ring in his palm.
He placed it on the stone floor.
Sophie stepped forward.
Together, father and daughter brought their heels down.
The silver wolf cracked.
The hidden mechanism shattered.
Gabriel watched the pieces scatter.
His face collapsed.
Sirens filled the night.
Medics lifted Rafe onto a stretcher.
Emma walked beside him.
He caught her wrist.
“Do not let Luca turn this into another prison.”
She understood.
“For Sophie?”
“For himself.”
Rafe was carried away.
Luca stood beneath his mother’s portrait.
Sophie held his hand.
Federal agents approached.
One carried restraints.
“Luca Moretti.”
“You are still required to answer for your own crimes.”
Emma’s heart tightened.
Luca extended his hands.
“I know.”
The agent placed him in handcuffs.
Sophie’s face crumpled.
Luca knelt as far as the restraints allowed.
His hands could not sign.
So he spoke slowly while Emma translated.
“I am leaving.”
“I am not abandoning you.”
“I am answering for what I did.”
Sophie touched his cheek.
Her hands moved.
How long?
Luca looked at the agent.
The man said nothing.
Luca turned back to Sophie.
“I do not know.”
Emma signed the truth.
Sophie began crying silently.
Luca pressed his forehead against hers.
“I will come back.”
The agents led him away.
Emma held Sophie beneath the portrait of the grandmother she had never known.
Outside, cameras flashed across the snow.
The world had learned the Wolves existed.
But as Luca entered the federal vehicle, an agent leaned close to him.
“There is a problem.”
Luca looked at him.
“The third transmission never reached the press.”
“Someone intercepted it.”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
“Who?”
The agent handed him a tablet.
A message glowed on the screen.
THE WOLVES ARE DEAD.
May you like
LONG LIVE THE SHEPHERD.
