Chapter 13 - The Final Betrayal

The sound of gunfire changed everything.

For years, Callum Russo had lived by one rule.

Never let anyone get close enough to hurt you.

But that rule had failed.

Because the person standing beside him now was the person he had spent years protecting without knowing why.

Sadie Miller.

The daughter of the man who had saved him.

The daughter of the woman who had hidden the truth.

The only person who had walked into his life carrying answers he never knew he needed.

“Stay behind me.”

Callum’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

Sadie looked at him.

“You always say that.”

“Because you never listen.”

“And you never ask for help.”

A bullet struck the wall beside them.

The conversation ended.

Marcus and the security team moved through the house.

“Eliminate the threat,” Callum ordered.

But something felt wrong.

The attackers weren’t trying to kill them immediately.

They were searching.

Looking for something.

Callum realized it first.

“They’re not here for us.”

Sadie looked at him.

“Then what are they looking for?”

Callum looked toward the old office.

“My grandfather’s files.”

They moved quickly.

The attackers had planned this.

They knew about the box.

They knew Elena had it.

And they knew Callum would come.

Inside the office, Elena opened a hidden compartment beneath the floor.

A small metal case was inside.

“My father hid this before he died.”

Callum stared.

“Your father?”

Elena looked down.

“My father knew what he created.”

Sadie frowned.

“Created?”

Elena slowly opened the case.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Bank records.

And one old tape recorder.

Callum picked it up.

“What is this?”

“Your grandfather’s confession.”

The room went silent.

Before they could play it, the door behind them opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

A man who looked like he had never been afraid of anything.

Callum recognized him immediately.

But he wished he hadn’t.

“Grandfather.”

Richard Russo smiled.

“My grandson.”

Sadie stepped back.

This was the man behind everything.

The man who had destroyed two families.

The man who had killed Anthony Russo.

Richard looked at Callum.

“You grew up exactly how I wanted.”

Callum’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means pain made you strong.”

Sadie looked disgusted.

“You ruined everyone’s lives.”

Richard smiled.

“Everyone has a purpose.”

Callum stepped forward.

“You killed my father.”

Richard didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

The answer shocked even Callum.

“You admit it?”

“Of course.”

Richard looked around the room.

“Your father became weak. He wanted honesty. Loyalty. Justice.”

He laughed quietly.

“Those things don’t build empires.”

Callum’s hands tightened.

“And Daniel?”

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

“Daniel was a mistake.”

Sadie froze.

“You killed my father too.”

Richard looked at her.

“He knew too much.”

The anger in Sadie’s eyes burned.

Callum moved closer.

“Why keep me alive?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because you were the perfect replacement.”

Silence.

“You had Russo blood. You had ambition. You had anger.”

He smiled.

“You became everything I wanted.”

Callum stared at him.

“No.”

Richard tilted his head.

“No?”

“You made me powerful.”

A pause.

“But you never owned me.”

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

Then the lights went out.

A single gunshot echoed.

When emergency lights returned…

May you like

Richard Russo was gone.

And the confession tape was missing.
