Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Never Died

Callum Russo spent his entire life believing his mother was gone.
Now he wondered how many other things he had believed were lies.
The private jet landed just before sunrise.
Callum sat silently during the entire flight.
Sadie sat across from him.
Neither spoke much.
There were too many questions.
Too many impossible answers.
When they arrived at the old countryside estate, Marcus confirmed the location.
“She’s inside.”
Callum looked at the house.
A place from his childhood.
A place he had not visited since his mother’s funeral.
His hand tightened.
Sadie noticed.
“You okay?”
Callum looked at her.
“No.”
The honesty surprised her.
Then he walked forward.
The front door opened before he touched it.
And standing there…
was a woman he had buried years ago.
His mother.
Elena Russo.
Older.
Different.
But alive.
Callum stopped breathing.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Elena whispered:
“My son.”
Callum’s face became cold.
“You’re dead.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had no choice.”
Callum laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“Everyone says that.”
Elena looked at Sadie.
Then back at him.
“She found you.”
Callum froze.
“What?”
Elena stepped aside.
“Daniel knew this day would come.”
Sadie looked confused.
“You knew my father?”
Elena looked at her.
“Yes.”
“How?”
A painful silence.
Then Elena said:
“Because Daniel Miller saved both of you.”
Callum stared.
“Both of us?”
Elena nodded.
“Your father was trying to expose the people who controlled Anthony Russo’s company.”
She looked at Sadie.
“And Daniel was trying to protect his daughter.”
Sadie whispered:
“From who?”
Elena’s eyes filled with fear.
A fear Callum had never seen before.
“The same person who killed Anthony.”
Callum stepped closer.
“Who?”
Elena looked at him.
Then said the name.
The name that made everything collapse.
“Your grandfather.”
Nobody spoke.
The room became silent.
Callum stared at her.
“My grandfather?”
Elena nodded.
“He built everything.”
Sadie shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Elena looked at them.
“Your families were never separate.”
A pause.
“They were connected long before you were born.”
Callum felt sick.
All his life, he thought he was fighting enemies.
But maybe…
he had been living inside the enemy’s plan.
Elena reached into a drawer and pulled out a small box.
“I kept this because I knew someday you would need it.”
Callum opened it.
Inside was a ring.
An old Russo family ring.
And a small note.
His grandfather’s handwriting.
Callum read the message.
His face changed.
“What does it say?”
He looked at Sadie.
His voice was barely audible.
“It says…”
A pause.
“My entire family was built on a murder.”
Before anyone could react, Elena’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her face immediately turned pale.
“What happened?”
She listened.
Then looked at Callum.
“They found us.”
The windows suddenly shattered.
Gunfire exploded through the house.
Callum grabbed Sadie and pushed her behind cover.
The past had finally caught up.

And this time…
it came with bullets.
