Chapter 9 - VANESSA’S TRUTH

For the first time, I understood why Vanessa sounded afraid.

Not fake afraid.

Not angry.

Terrified.

We couldn’t rush Willow Creek.

Sarah called state tactical officers.

Mark stayed with Lily at a protected location.

I hated leaving her.

But Chloe was eight.

And whatever Vanessa had done, Chloe didn’t deserve to pay for it.

Before I left, Lily hugged me.

“Bring Chloe back.”

“I will.”

“And Daddy?”

I couldn’t answer immediately.

“I’ll try.”

Willow Creek sat behind rusted gates and dead trees.

The old youth home looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Collapsed porch.

We entered from the rear.

Sarah went first.

Inside, the building smelled like mold and wet wood.

Then we heard crying.

A child.

“Mom!”

Chloe.

We found her locked in an office.

Alone.

Vanessa was gone.

On the floor beside Chloe lay Vanessa’s phone.

A video was playing on repeat.

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

“Emma, if you’re watching this, Dad caught me.”

Her face was swollen.

Blood marked one corner of her mouth.

“I know you hate me.”

I did.

“But there are things you don’t know.”

She swallowed.

“I cut Lily’s hair because I’m cruel.”

No excuse.

No denial.

“I was jealous. I hated hearing people compare our daughters. I convinced myself Lily was taking something away from Chloe.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“She wasn’t.”

“I was.”

She wiped her face.

“But the livestream…”

Her voice shook.

“That was Dad’s idea.”

Sarah looked at me.

Vanessa continued.

“He wanted Lily frightened enough to repeat whatever she heard at home.”

I clenched my jaw.

“Daniel tried to stop him.”

That surprised me.

“He’s done horrible things, Emma. He lied to you. He watched you. He married you because Dad ordered him to.”

My chest tightened.

“But something changed after Lily was born.”

Vanessa looked off-camera.

“Daniel started collecting evidence.”

I whispered, “Against Robert?”

Vanessa continued as though answering me.

“He’s been building a case for four years.”

The video cut briefly.

Then resumed.

“There’s a basement under the east wing.”

Sarah’s attention sharpened.

“That’s where Dad kept the records.”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“And Rachel.”

My stomach turned.

“What?”

“Rachel Mason didn’t run away.”

“She had a baby.”

My hands went cold.

“A little girl.”

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

“Your mother helped hide that baby.”

Then footsteps sounded behind her.

Vanessa whispered quickly.

“Emma, Lily isn’t connected to Willow Creek because Daniel used her identity.”

She looked terrified.

“She’s connected because of you.”

The video ended.

Before I could process it, a gunshot exploded somewhere beneath the building.
