Chapter 12 - THE FILE MARKED LILY

Robert fell.

The bullet struck his leg.

He screamed.

Vanessa dropped the gun immediately.

Sarah rushed in and kicked it away.

“Hands where I can see them!”

Robert spat curses while officers dragged him out.

Vanessa collapsed against the wall.

“I shot my father.”

“You stopped him,” I said.

She looked at me.

“You don’t have to make me feel better.”

“I’m not.”

That surprised her.

“You hurt my daughter.”

Her face crumpled.

“I know.”

“And whatever happens next doesn’t erase that.”

“I know.”

“But you also saved my life.”

Vanessa nodded.

“That doesn’t erase it either.”

For the first time, we understood each other.

Not forgiveness.

Truth.

Outside, paramedics treated Daniel.

I sat beside him.

“Was any of our marriage real?”

He closed his eyes.

“That’s not a fair question.”

“I think I earned unfair questions.”

He looked at me.

“The beginning wasn’t.”

My chest tightened.

“I met you because Dad told me to.”

I stared ahead.

“But I didn’t expect you.”

“What does that mean?”

“You were supposed to be information.”

He gave a broken laugh.

“Then you became the person who left coffee on my desk when I worked late.”

I looked away.

“You became the woman who danced barefoot in our kitchen.”

“Stop.”

“And when Lily was born…”

His voice broke.

“I knew I couldn’t keep doing what he wanted.”

“You still watched me.”

“Yes.”

“You still lied.”

“Yes.”

“You let Vanessa frighten Lily.”

“I thought she was only going to question her.”

“That isn’t better.”

“I know.”

At least he didn’t ask forgiveness.

Sarah approached carrying a file.

“We found something.”

The folder was labeled:

LILY CROSS

I took it.

Inside were photographs.

Hospital records.

Trust documents.

DNA paperwork.

A handwritten note from my mother.

If Emma has a daughter, Robert will eventually attempt to control her.

Rachel left evidence that legally transfers several Cross assets to her biological descendants if her death is proven unlawful.

My mouth fell open.

“That’s why Lily was beneficiary.”

Sarah nodded.

“Rachel apparently had help from an attorney.”

Daniel whispered, “My father thought the trust was dead.”

“But when Lily was born…”

“He discovered the bloodline continued.”

I looked at my daughter’s name.

Robert hadn’t been protecting his company from me.

He had been protecting it from Lily.

Sarah turned another page.

“There’s more.”

A list of properties.

Bank accounts.

Corporate shares.

If Rachel’s death was formally ruled homicide caused by Robert Cross, control shifted automatically.

Not to me.

To Lily.

Nearly forty percent of Cross Development.

I stared at Daniel.

“He tortured our child over money?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not just money.”

Sarah handed me the final sheet.

A list of names.

Judges.

Politicians.

Executives.

Police officers.

All connected to Willow Creek.

At the bottom was one name circled in red by my mother.

I recognized it instantly.

May you like

Detective Mark Hale.

My cousin.
