Chapter 1 - THE YELLOW HAT

Lily lifted the yellow hat with both trembling hands.

And my heart stopped.

My five-year-old daughter’s long brown braid was gone.

Not trimmed.

Not shortened.

Gone.

Her hair had been hacked into ugly, uneven patches around her ears and neck, as if someone had attacked it in a rage.

Then I saw the blood.

A thin dried line ran above her left ear.

“Lily…”

My voice came out wrong.

Too quiet.

Too controlled.

“What happened to you?”

Her little mouth trembled.

She looked past me toward my sister-in-law, Vanessa, who was standing beside the kitchen island with a glass of white wine in her hand.

Vanessa wore a cream sweater, diamond earrings, and the same relaxed smile she used whenever she wanted everyone to believe nothing was wrong.

Lily whispered, “Aunt Vanessa said my hair was too pretty.”

I stared at my daughter.

“What?”

“She said Chloe gets sad because people say my hair is prettier.”

A tear rolled down Lily’s cheek.

“And Aunt Vanessa said that wasn’t fair.”

I slowly turned.

On the dining table sat a clear plastic bag.

Inside it was Lily’s braid.

The braid I had brushed every morning.

The braid Lily had proudly worn to kindergarten.

The braid that reached halfway down her back.

Vanessa took a sip of wine.

“She got into my beauty scissors.”

I looked at her.

“She cut it herself?”

“That’s what I just said.”

Lily began shaking her head.

Vanessa’s smile tightened.

“She’s embarrassed, Emma. Kids lie when they’re embarrassed.”

My stomach turned.

“Lily.”

I knelt.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“Did you cut your own hair?”

“No.”

Her answer came instantly.

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“Oh, for God’s sake.”

“Did Aunt Vanessa cut it?”

Lily’s face crumpled.

“Yes.”

Vanessa put down her wine.

“She moved while I was fixing a knot. That’s how she got scratched.”

“You just said she cut it herself.”

Vanessa froze.

For half a second.

Then she shrugged.

“I’m stressed. I misspoke.”

Something inside me snapped.

I crossed the room before I even realized I had moved.

My palm cracked across Vanessa’s face.

She stumbled backward into a chair.

“What the hell!”

“My five-year-old would never cut off her own braid.”

Vanessa lunged toward me.

I grabbed her wrist.

A pair of electric clippers sat on the beauty cart beside the table.

I don’t know why they were there.

Not yet.

I grabbed them.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Emma, don’t you dare.”

The clippers buzzed to life.

I dragged them through the side of her expensive salon-styled hair.

A thick strip fell to the floor.

Vanessa screamed.

I did it again.

And again.

“STOP!”

I stopped.

Not because she asked.

Because Lily was crying harder.

I dropped the clippers.

Vanessa touched the bald streaks in horror.

“You psycho.”

Then I noticed something glowing behind her.

A tablet.

On the screen was a saved video.

LIVESTREAM — 2:14

My pulse changed.

I picked it up.

Vanessa lunged.

“Give me that!”

I stepped away and hit PLAY.

The video opened.

Bright beauty lights.

Lily sitting in a chair.

Vanessa standing behind her.

Scissors already open.

And then Vanessa said something that made the haircut suddenly feel like the smallest part of what had happened.

“Smile for the camera, Lily.”

May you like

“Because after today…”

“…your mommy might not get to keep you anymore.”
