Chapter 14 - THE FINAL LIE

The world stopped.

Daniel stared at Mark.

“What did you say?”

Mark handed me the report.

I couldn’t read it.

My hands shook too badly.

Daniel grabbed it.

His face drained of color.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“This says…”

His voice died.

I knew.

Five years earlier, Daniel and I had separated briefly before our wedding.

One month.

Because I discovered he had lied about meeting Vanessa when we first dated.

During that separation, I spent one night with someone I had loved before Daniel.

Ethan Cole.

I had told Daniel.

I had never hidden it.

When I became pregnant months later, doctors gave us dates.

Daniel had always believed Lily was his.

So had I.

Mark spoke quietly.

“Robert secretly tested her after birth.”

“Why wouldn’t he tell Daniel?”

“Because Lily was still Rachel’s descendant through Emma.”

My knees weakened.

Daniel sank into a pew.

“She isn’t mine?”

Lily stared at him.

“Daddy?”

His entire expression changed.

He immediately crossed the church.

He knelt in front of her.

“No.”

I held my breath.

Daniel touched her tiny hand.

“No, baby. Don’t look scared.”

“Are you my daddy?”

Daniel started crying.

It was the first time I had ever seen him lose control completely.

“Yes.”

Mark interrupted softly.

“Biologically—”

Daniel snapped around.

“I don’t care.”

Then he looked back at Lily.

“I was there when you took your first breath.”

His voice broke.

“I changed your diapers badly.”

Lily almost smiled.

“I know.”

“I walked the hallway with you every night when you had colic.”

“You sang bad.”

Daniel laughed through tears.

“Yes, I did.”

Lily touched his cheek.

“You’re still Daddy.”

He pressed her hand against his face.

“If you’ll let me be.”

I turned away because my anger and grief had become too tangled to name.

Sirens sounded outside.

Mark raised both hands.

“I’m surrendering.”

I looked at him.

“Why take Lily?”

“Because one name on that list isn’t dead or arrested.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the church entrance.

A woman stood there.

Sarah Knox.

My blood froze.

Sarah smiled.

“Mark always was terrible at keeping secrets.”

She raised a gun.

Mark stepped in front of Lily.

Sarah fired.

He dropped.

Chaos erupted.

Daniel pulled Lily behind the pew.

I crawled toward Mark.

Sarah aimed at me.

“You should’ve stayed out of Willow Creek.”

I stared at her.

“You worked for Robert?”

She laughed.

“Robert worked for people much bigger than him.”

Then she aimed at Lily.

Daniel lunged.

The gun fired.

He slammed into Sarah.

They crashed against the pews.

I grabbed the nearest object.

A heavy brass candle stand.

I swung.

It struck Sarah’s wrist.

The gun skidded away.

Mark, bleeding from his shoulder, kicked it beneath a pew.

Police burst through the doors.

Sarah screamed as officers tackled her.

And just like that, the last hidden piece of Willow Creek collapsed.

Three months later, federal prosecutors announced charges against twelve people.

Robert Cross.

Sarah Knox.

Two judges.

Four former officers.

Several executives.

Vanessa pleaded guilty to child endangerment and assault for what she had done to Lily.

She did not fight the charge.

She did not make excuses.

And Daniel?

His case was more complicated.

Much more complicated.

Because the final evidence showed he had spent four years secretly recording his father.

He had lied to me.

Manipulated me.

Watched me.

But he had also built the case that destroyed Robert.

The question wasn’t whether Daniel loved Lily.

I knew he did.

May you like

The question was whether love could repair what lies had destroyed.

And six months later, I finally gave him my answer.
