Chapter 1 — The Night Nathan Discovered the Monster Inside His Home

Nathan Harrington had spent twelve years believing he had built the perfect life.

A billion-dollar company.

A beautiful mansion.

A respected family name.

And beside him, Victoria Harrington — the woman everyone admired.

She was elegant.

Charitable.

Graceful.

The face of every fundraiser in the city.

People called her the perfect mother.

But at 1:03 a.m., standing at the bottom of his own basement stairs, Nathan realized he had never truly known his wife.

The three children sitting against the cold concrete wall looked nothing like the happy children from family photographs.

Their faces were pale.

Their bodies were trembling.

And their eyes carried a fear no child should ever have.

Nathan looked at Victoria.

The riding crop on the floor.

The empty food tray in the corner.

The thin blankets.

The locked basement door.

Everything suddenly made sense.

“Explain.”

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Victoria’s face turned white.

“Nathan… this isn’t what you think.”

He slowly looked at the children.

Then back at his wife.

“I heard you threaten them.”

Victoria swallowed.

“They were being difficult.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Difficult?”

His voice rose slightly.

“They are children.”

The little girl named Emma grabbed her brother’s sleeve.

“Daddy…”

Nathan froze.

He had not heard that word from her before.

Not from his children.

Not in years.

Because Victoria had always told him the children were shy.

Sensitive.

Difficult with strangers.

But now he understood.

They weren’t shy.

They were terrified.

Nathan walked toward them slowly.

“It’s okay. I’m here.”

The little boy looked up.

His voice shook.

“Are you really going to stop her?”

Nathan felt something break inside him.

Because his own children were asking if their father would protect them.

And the answer should never have been a question.

“Yes.”

Nathan looked at Victoria.

“I promise.”

That night, the Harrington mansion changed forever.

Because Nathan Harrington didn’t sleep.

He spent the rest of the night uncovering every secret his wife had hidden.

he would discover that the basement was only the beginning.
