Chapter 7 - THE CABIN

Police surrounded the cabin before midnight.
Valerie was gone.
Again.
But this time she left something behind.
A laptop.
Printed insurance documents.
Copies of Sophie’s medical records.
And a handwritten timeline.
Alejandro read it inside the police command vehicle.
FEBRUARY — MARRIAGE.
MARCH — TRUST.
APRIL — ILLNESS.
MAY — CARE FACILITY.
JUNE — CUSTODY REVIEW.
JULY — BENEFICIARY CHANGE.
Every month of their marriage had been reduced to a step.
Alejandro felt nauseated.
Rachel pointed to the final line.
AUGUST — CLEAN EXIT.
“What does that mean?”
Alejandro asked.
“We don’t know.”
But Alejandro did know one thing.
It meant Valerie had never loved him.
Not even for a day.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
Rachel looked at it.
“Answer.”
Alejandro did.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then Valerie spoke.
“You made this much bigger than it needed to be.”
Alejandro’s entire body went rigid.
Rachel signaled to technicians.
“Where are you?”
Valerie laughed softly.
“You sound different.”
“Where are you?”
“Did Sophie tell you everything?”
Alejandro looked at Rachel.
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“Children exaggerate.”
“She has pneumonia.”
“That isn’t my fault.”
“You withheld her antibiotics.”
“I was helping her.”
“You gave her something that made her sick.”
Valerie’s voice sharpened.
“Careful.”
“Why?”
“Because you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I know about Marcus.”
Silence.
“I know about Diane.”
Longer silence.
“I know about the insurance policy.”
Valerie stopped breathing for a second.
That was enough.
Alejandro knew.
“You married me for money.”
Valerie laughed.
“You think this was only money?”
“Then tell me.”
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“I spent eight years watching men like you walk through that company acting like you built everything alone.”
Alejandro frowned.
“I didn’t know you eight years ago.”
“No.”
“But you knew my father.”
Alejandro froze.
Rachel looked up.
“Who was your father?”
Valerie ignored her.
Alejandro searched his memory.
Then one name surfaced.
“Thomas Blake.”
Silence.
Valerie’s maiden name had been Blake.
Thomas Blake had owned a small trucking subcontractor that Rivers Logistics stopped using nine years earlier after a safety investigation.
His company collapsed.
He died three years later.
Alejandro had barely thought about him since.
“You’re Thomas Blake’s daughter.”
“You remember.”
“He falsified safety records.”
“He lost everything because of you.”
“He lost his contract because he put drivers at risk.”
“My mother lost our house.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“You didn’t care.”
Valerie’s voice cracked for the first time.
“My father died believing you destroyed him.”
Alejandro understood.
Money had been part of it.
But there was something older underneath.
Revenge.
“You came after Sophie because you hated me?”
“No.”
“I came after the thing you loved most.”
Alejandro stopped breathing.
Rachel’s face hardened.
Valerie continued.
“I wanted you to understand what losing everything felt like.”
Then the line went dead.
The technicians shook their heads.
Too short.
Too many relays.
No location.
Alejandro stood motionless.
Rachel said,
“She just admitted motive.”
Alejandro stared at the phone.
“No.”
“What?”
“She admitted something worse.”
He looked toward the dark cabin.
“She never needed Sophie’s money.”
Rachel understood.
“This was personal.”
Alejandro nodded.
“And if Valerie thinks she has nothing left to lose…”
He couldn’t finish.
Then his phone buzzed.
A text.
One photograph.
Sophie’s hospital.
Taken from the parking garage.
Timestamped three minutes earlier.
