Chapter 14 - THE BOX MARISSA LEFT BEHIND

One year after Valerie’s arrest, Elena arrived carrying a wooden box.

Alejandro recognized it immediately.

“Where did you find that?”

“My attic.”

It belonged to Marissa.

Inside were photographs.

Birthday cards.

A hospital bracelet from the day Sophie was born.

A tiny pair of baby socks.

And letters.

Dozens of them.

Sophie sat cross-legged on the floor.

“Are those Mommy’s?”

“Yes.”

Elena handed her one.

It was labeled:

FOR SOPHIE — WHEN YOU’RE TEN.

Sophie was nine.

She looked at Alejandro.

“Can I open it early?”

Alejandro smiled.

“Your mom would probably yell at me.”

“Grandma?”

Elena shrugged.

“I was never good at rules.”

Sophie opened it.

Marissa’s handwriting filled two pages.

My sweet Sophie,

If you’re reading this, you’re probably taller, smarter, and much more stubborn than you were when I wrote it.

Sophie grinned.

“She knew.”

Alejandro laughed.

“Definitely.”

Sophie continued.

There will be moments when people tell you who you should be.

Listen carefully, but remember that you are allowed to decide for yourself.

There will also be people who confuse love with control.

Real love does not make you afraid to speak.

Real love does not make you smaller.

Real love makes room for your voice.

Sophie stopped reading.

Alejandro stared at the letter.

It felt almost impossible.

As if Marissa had written directly into the future.

Sophie continued.

And if life ever gets scary, find Uncle Alejandro.

He acts tough, but he cries during dog movies.

Alejandro looked offended.

“That is completely false.”

Elena laughed.

Sophie kept reading.

He will always come for you.

Because that is who he is.

Sophie stopped.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Alejandro couldn’t speak.

She crawled across the floor and hugged him.

“You did.”

He held her.

“I’ll always try.”

“No.”

She pulled back.

“Mommy said you will.”

Alejandro smiled through tears.

“Then I guess I don’t have a choice.”

That evening, they placed Marissa’s letter in a frame.

Not because Sophie needed proof her mother loved her.

She already knew.

But because one sentence deserved to remain where she could see it.

REAL LOVE MAKES ROOM FOR YOUR VOICE.

They hung it above Sophie’s desk.

Directly beside the tablet.

The same tablet that had once captured the worst days of her life.

Sophie still used it.

Alejandro had offered to replace it.

She refused.

“Why keep it?”

He asked.

Sophie shrugged.

“Because it helped me tell the truth.”

Alejandro understood.

The object itself had never been the frightening part.

May you like

The silence had.

And Sophie had broken it.
