Chapter 4 - THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT JEALOUSY

Police found Marcus Dale’s vehicle abandoned outside Waco.
Valerie’s SUV was gone too.
Detective Monroe believed they had switched cars.
Alejandro didn’t care how.
He cared why.
For the first time, he began examining his marriage as if it were one of his business contracts.
Dates.
Messages.
Money.
Timing.
Valerie had started working at Rivers Logistics eight months before they met.
She transferred into Alejandro’s branch six weeks before their first conversation.
Three weeks later, she accidentally spilled coffee on him in an elevator.
He had laughed.
She had apologized.
Then she invited him to lunch.
Alejandro sat in the hospital family room staring at the timeline.
“None of this was accidental.”
Rachel sat across from him.
“We don’t know that yet.”
“I do.”
He tapped the paper.
“She positioned herself.”
“Why?”
“That’s what I want you to tell me.”
Rachel slid another document across the table.
“We found something.”
It was a copy of Alejandro’s life insurance policy.
He frowned.
“What does this have to do with Sophie?”
Alejandro did.
His primary beneficiary was Sophie.
If Sophie died before reaching eighteen, the beneficiary became his legal spouse.
Valerie.
Alejandro stopped.
He read it again.
Then a third time.
“No.”
Elena was standing behind him.
“What is it?”
Alejandro handed her the page.
Her face went white.
Rachel spoke quietly.
“Your policy is worth eight million dollars.”
Alejandro looked up.
“You think she was trying to kill Sophie for eight million dollars?”
“We don’t know her intent yet.”
“Then what do you call this?”
“I call it evidence.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“And evidence needs to survive court.”
Alejandro stood.
“She married me knowing this.”
“Maybe.”
“She had access to company benefits records.”
Rachel nodded.
“That’s something we’re checking.”
Alejandro turned toward the window.
He felt sick.
He remembered Valerie asking casual questions.
Did Sophie have a trust?
Who handled Marissa’s estate?
What would happen to Sophie’s inheritance if something happened to her?
He had answered.
Because she was his wife.
Because he trusted her.
Rachel’s phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then looked at Alejandro.
“We found Marcus.”
“Where?”
“South Austin.”
“And Valerie?”
“Not with him.”
Alejandro moved toward the door.
Rachel stopped him.
“You’re not coming.”
“That man was inside my house.”
“And you’re the father of a hospitalized child.”
“He knows where Valerie is.”
“And trained officers are speaking to him.”
Alejandro’s jaw clenched.
Rachel’s phone rang again.
She answered.
Her expression sharpened.
“What?”
A long pause.
“Send it to me.”
She ended the call.
“Marcus is talking.”
Alejandro stepped closer.
“What did he say?”
Rachel looked at him.
“He says Valerie hired him.”
“For what?”
“To supply substances that would make Sophie appear chronically ill.”
Elena sat down.
Alejandro didn’t move.
“Why?”
“According to Marcus, Valerie originally wanted you to believe Sophie had a serious long-term health condition.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It does if the goal was to change custody and estate arrangements.”
Rachel opened an email on her phone.
“Marcus says Valerie wanted Sophie placed in a private care facility.”
Alejandro stared.
“She wanted my daughter institutionalized?”
“Temporarily.”
“Why?”
“So Valerie could convince you that Sophie needed professional care.”
Alejandro’s voice went cold.
“And then?”
Rachel hesitated.
“Marcus claims he refused when Valerie started talking about making Sophie permanently disappear from your household.”
The room went silent.
Elena whispered,
“Permanently?”
Rachel nodded.
“His word.”
Alejandro closed his eyes.
This wasn’t jealousy.
It wasn’t a cruel stepmother losing patience.
It was planning.
Valerie had wanted Sophie gone.
Maybe alive.
Maybe not.
Whatever made Alejandro easiest to control.
Then Rachel’s phone vibrated.
A photograph appeared.
Security footage from a bus station.
Valerie.
Baseball cap.
Sunglasses.
One small suitcase.
Timestamped seventeen minutes earlier.
Rachel zoomed in.
Then frowned.
Valerie wasn’t alone.
A woman stood beside her.
Older.
Gray coat.
Dark hair.
Alejandro leaned toward the screen.
His face changed.
“No.”
Elena looked.
Then gasped.
Rachel noticed.
“You know her?”
Alejandro stared at the woman standing beside his wife.
“Yes.”
May you like
His voice sounded hollow.
“That’s Sophie’s other grandmother.”
