Chapter 12 - THE TRIAL

Eight months later, Sophie walked into court holding Alejandro’s hand.
She was healthy again.
Her hair had grown longer.
Her cheeks had color.
And tucked under one arm was the same worn pink blanket Marissa had left her.
Sophie did not testify in open court.
Alejandro refused to let the process turn her pain into public entertainment.
Her recorded forensic interview was enough.
The tablet recordings were devastating.
The medical evidence was worse.
Dr. Harris explained how withholding prescribed antibiotics allowed Sophie’s infection to progress.
A toxicologist explained the substance found in her blood.
Marcus testified as part of a plea agreement.
Diane testified too.
Neither looked at Alejandro.
Then prosecutors played Valerie’s own phone call.
“I came after the thing you loved most.”
The courtroom went silent.
Valerie sat beside her attorneys.
For the first time, she looked small.
Not powerless.
Just exposed.
The polished smile was gone.
So was the story she had built.
The defense argued that Valerie never intended Sophie to die.
The prosecutor answered with one sentence.
“You do not have to intend the final consequence to be responsible for the choices that created it.”
Alejandro watched the jury.
Then he looked at Sophie.
She was in a protected room elsewhere in the courthouse with Elena, drawing pictures and eating crackers.
That mattered more.
The verdict came after six hours.
Guilty on the major counts.
Alejandro did not celebrate.
He simply closed his eyes.
Rachel sat behind him.
“It’s over.”
Alejandro shook his head.
“No.”
She understood.
Trials ended.
Healing didn’t.
At sentencing, Alejandro was permitted to speak.
He stood at the podium.
Valerie watched him.
He unfolded a page.
Then put it away.
“I wrote something.”
He looked at the judge.
“But I don’t need it.”
He turned toward Valerie.
“My daughter was eight years old.”
“She had already buried her mother.”
“She came into my home believing it was finally a place where she could be safe.”
“And you learned exactly what frightened her.”
“Then you used it.”
Valerie lowered her eyes.
“You told her I would stop loving her.”
“You told her I would choose you.”
“You told her that being sick made her a burden.”
Alejandro paused.
“None of those things were true.”
He looked toward the judge again.
“Sophie asked me once if Valerie ruined our family.”
“I told her no.”
“Because Valerie does not get that power.”
“We are still a family.”
“We are simply a family that knows more clearly what love is supposed to look like.”
Alejandro stepped away.
Valerie received a lengthy prison sentence.
Marcus received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
Diane was convicted on lesser charges related to the conspiracy and permanently barred from unsupervised contact with Sophie.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Alejandro ignored them.
He found Sophie sitting on a bench with Elena.
“Done?”
Sophie asked.
“Done.”
“Can we go home?”
Alejandro smiled.
“Best idea I’ve heard all day.”
Sophie stood.
Then she looked at the courthouse doors.
“Is Valerie coming?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She took his hand.
Halfway to the car, Sophie stopped.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“I want pancakes.”
May you like
Alejandro laughed.
“Of course you do.”
