Chapter 9 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Bennett Airfield belonged to Claire’s father.
Officially, it was a private aviation facility for executives and government officials.
Unofficially, it was where the Bennett family moved people who could not pass through public airports.
The runway stretched across open farmland.
Three hangars stood near the control tower.
A white Gulfstream waited near the eastern fence.
Its engines were already running.
Claire’s father, Senator Richard Bennett, stood beside the aircraft.
He wore a dark overcoat and held a phone in one hand.
Two armed men guarded the stairs.
Claire’s SUV raced onto the tarmac.
She stepped out before it fully stopped.
“Where is Harper?” Bennett asked.
Claire’s face hardened.
“She escaped.”
His expression changed.
“You left without the child?”
“Vale teams breached the estate.”
“We had no time.”
“Then we have no leverage.”
Claire removed the brass key from her pocket.
“We have this.”
Bennett stared at it.
“What is it?”
“The mausoleum key.”
“Nathan said the original ledger is inside Samuel Vale’s crypt.”
Bennett looked toward the plane.
“We leave now.”
“And allow Dominic to recover it?”
“We can destroy him from abroad.”
“No.”
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“If Dominic gets the ledger, every judge, officer, donor, and contractor connected to us is exposed.”
“Your Senate seat disappears.”
“Our accounts are frozen.”
“Our allies become witnesses.”
Bennett looked at his daughter.
For the first time, he seemed to see the danger inside her.
“What are you proposing?”
Claire looked toward the waiting SUV.
“We go to the Vale cemetery.”
“We remove the ledger.”
“Then we leave.”
“That estate will be surrounded.”
“Not the cemetery.”
“There is an old service road through the northern woods.”
“Nathan showed it to me.”
Bennett hesitated.
The plane’s engines roared behind them.
“We do not know if Nathan is alive.”
Claire walked closer.
“Nathan was useful.”
“He was never necessary.”
A convoy appeared near the far gate.
Black vehicles.
Fast.
Claire turned.
Dominic’s cars entered the airfield.
Bennett’s guards raised their weapons.
Dominic’s lead SUV struck the gate and drove directly onto the runway.
The Gulfstream pilot began moving the aircraft.
Bennett shouted into his phone.
“Take off!”
The plane rolled forward.
Dominic leaned from the passenger window.
He fired at the front landing gear.
The first shot missed.
The second struck metal.
The tire burst.
The aircraft swerved.
One wing clipped a service truck.
The plane spun across the runway and stopped in a cloud of smoke.
Claire stared.
Dominic’s convoy surrounded the tarmac.
Doors opened.
Armed men stepped out.
Gabriel’s team moved toward the hangars.
Marcus approached from the western side.
Daniel had remained with Harper.
Mia stepped from Dominic’s vehicle.
Rose followed her.
Senator Bennett’s face lost color.
Claire looked from Mia to Rose.
“You.”
Rose raised her pistol.
“Yes.”
“Me.”
Bennett backed toward the damaged aircraft.
Dominic walked across the runway.
Rain had stopped.
Wind moved through his dark coat.
The Vale signet ring remained on his hand.
Claire saw it.
Her eyes narrowed.
“You know.”
“I know enough.”
“Then you know the empire belongs to her.”
Claire pointed toward Mia.
Several men looked at one another.
Dominic noticed.
Nathan’s poison was already working.
Doubt moved through the ranks.
Who was the true heir?
Who had authority?
Who should they obey?
Claire smiled.
“You cannot lead men who know you are sitting in another person’s chair.”
Dominic stopped several yards away.
“Maybe.”
He looked toward Mia.
“But she can.”
Every eye moved to her.
Mia stared at Dominic.
He gave one slight nod.
She stepped forward.
Her wrists were bandaged.
Bruises marked her face.
She wore no expensive coat.
No jewels except the silver bird.
No one would have mistaken her for a mafia heir.
That was exactly why everyone listened.
“My father walked away from this empire,” Mia said.
“He chose a different name.”
“A different life.”
“He chose my mother.”
“He chose me.”
She looked at the armed men around the runway.
“I will not dishonor him by fighting over a throne he never wanted.”
Claire’s smile faded.
Mia continued.
“But I will use his name for one thing.”
“To protect my daughter.”
“And every person Nathan Cross or the Bennett family has threatened.”
She looked at Dominic.
“I do not want your empire.”
Dominic’s voice carried across the tarmac.
“Then help me end the part of it that created them.”
The doubt among the men changed.
Not gone.
But redirected.
Claire saw control slipping away.
She raised her gun toward Mia.
Dominic fired first.
The bullet struck Claire’s hand.
Her weapon flew across the runway.
She screamed and dropped to one knee.
Senator Bennett’s guards opened fire.
Gabriel’s men responded.
Gunshots echoed between the hangars.
Dominic pulled Mia behind a vehicle.
Rose fired from the rear door.
Marcus moved toward the plane.
Bennett ran for the hangar.
Claire crawled toward her fallen gun.
Mia saw her.
She left cover.
Dominic grabbed for her and missed.
Mia reached Claire first.
She kicked the gun away.
Claire rose and struck her across the face.
Mia stumbled.
Claire grabbed her injured wrist and twisted.
Pain shot through Mia’s arm.
She cried out.
Claire leaned close.
“You should have stayed invisible.”
Mia drove her forehead into Claire’s nose.
Claire fell backward.
Blood ran over her lips.
Mia stood above her.
“I was never invisible.”
“You just never looked down.”
Claire lunged.
They crashed against the side of the SUV.
Claire clawed at Mia’s bandages.
Mia struck her in the stomach.
Claire pulled the brass key from her coat.
She drove it toward Mia’s throat.
Rose shouted.
“Mia!”
Mia caught Claire’s wrist.
The key stopped inches from her neck.
Claire pressed harder.
“You think Dominic cares about you?”
“He cares about control.”
“He will use you until the men accept him again.”
Mia’s arms trembled.
“You do not understand him.”
Claire laughed through the blood.
“Neither do you.”
A gunshot sounded near the hangar.
Senator Bennett fell.
Marcus stood behind him.
The senator clutched his leg.
Gabriel’s men surrounded the remaining guards.
The battle ended as quickly as it began.
Claire looked around.
She was alone.
Nathan captured.
Her father bleeding.
Her guards disarmed.
Her plane destroyed.
Dominic approached.
Claire released the key.
It fell between her and Mia.
Dominic looked down at her.
For two years, he had believed this woman would become his wife.
He had given her access to his home.
His name.
His future.
Now she knelt on the runway with blood across her white dress.
“I loved you,” Claire said.
Dominic’s expression did not change.
“No.”
“You loved what you believed you could inherit.”
“You would have done the same.”
“No.”
“You kill people.”
“I do.”
“You destroy families.”
“I have.”
“You built everything through fear.”
“Yes.”
Claire stared at him.
“Then how are you different from me?”
Dominic looked toward Mia.
Then toward Rose.
Then at the distant road leading back to Harper.
“I know what I am.”
“You kept pretending you were innocent.”
Claire’s face became empty.
Dominic held out his hand.
“The key.”
She looked down.
Mia picked it up first.
She placed it in Dominic’s palm.
Claire laughed softly.
“There.”
“You see?”
“She gives you everything.”
“She will give you the empire too.”
Mia turned toward her.
“No.”
“I gave him a key.”
“Trust is something he will have to earn.”
Dominic closed his hand around the brass key.
That sentence affected him more than Claire’s betrayal.
Fear had always been immediate.
Trust required time.
Time was something Dominic had never known how to give.
Marcus dragged Senator Bennett closer.
The senator’s face was gray with pain.
“You cannot do this,” Bennett said.
“I am a United States senator.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“You are a man bleeding on a runway.”
“Titles change faster than blood.”
Dominic turned toward the vehicles.
“Take them both.”
Claire looked at him.
“Where?”
“To the estate.”
Her face changed.
The estate was no longer her future home.
It was the place where her lies would be judged.
Nathan’s escort vehicle entered the airfield.
The door opened.
Two guards pulled him out.
When Nathan saw Claire, he smiled.
When Claire saw him alive, she did not.
“You failed,” she said.
Nathan laughed.
“You lost a child.”
“You lost an empire.”
“You were supposed to kill Rose.”
“You were supposed to control Dominic.”
Dominic watched them turn on one another.
Seventeen years of conspiracy collapsed in less than a minute.
There had never been loyalty between them.
Only shared appetite.
Nathan looked at the damaged plane.
Then at the key in Dominic’s hand.
“You are going to the mausoleum.”
“Yes.”
“You think the ledger will save you?”
“No.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“I think it will expose you.”
Nathan’s smile disappeared.
“The ledger has names you are not prepared to see.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Politicians?”
“Yes.”
“Police?”
“Yes.”
Nathan leaned closer.
“And someone still inside your home.”
Mia went still.
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“Who?”
Nathan smiled again.
“The person who helped Claire reach Harper’s room.”
Daniel had found Harper.
Marcus had been captured at St. Agnes.
Most of the estate guards had been separated.
But someone had opened the east suite from inside the security network.
Someone with access beyond ordinary guards.
Dominic stared at Nathan.
“Give me the name.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You will find it in the ledger.”
The convoy turned back toward Hudson Valley.
Claire and Senator Bennett rode in separate vehicles.
Nathan traveled under armed guard.
Mia sat beside Dominic again.
Rose sat across from them.
No one spoke for several miles.
Then Mia looked at Dominic.
“Who has access to the entire estate security system?”
“Marcus.”
“He was with us.”
“Daniel.”
“He saved Harper.”
“Me.”
“You were with us.”
Rose watched Dominic’s face.
“There is someone else.”
Dominic looked through the windshield.
A memory returned.
Claire standing in the library.
The engagement ring on the table.
Her confidence that she could leave.
The alarm disabled from inside Harper’s room.
The estate system had been designed by one person.
A man Dominic had trusted long before Daniel or Marcus joined him.
Dominic’s assistant.
Elias Ward.
The quiet man waiting beside the entrance when Dominic first returned home.
The man holding a phone filled with problems.
The man who had disappeared during the cellar attack.
Dominic pressed the communication device in his ear.
“Estate command.”
Daniel answered.
“I’m here.”
“Where is Elias?”
A pause followed.
Too long.
Daniel’s voice changed.
“He is in the east wing with Harper.”
Mia stopped breathing.
Dominic leaned forward.
“Get her away from him.”
May you like
Gunfire exploded through the radio.
Then Harper screamed.
