Chapter 1 - THE LOCKED HOUSE

The moment Dominic Vale saw Mia Carter alive, the entire estate became a prison.

No one left.

No one called outside.

No one touched a phone without permission.

Dominic stood in the wine cellar while Daniel cut the remaining rope from Mia’s ankles.

Harper remained pressed against her mother’s chest.

The little girl was shaking so badly that Mia could barely hold her.

Still, Mia kept whispering the same words.

“I’m here, baby.”

“I’m here.”

Dominic watched them for several seconds.

Then he turned toward Nathan Cross.

Nathan had not moved from the doorway.

His face was controlled again.

Calm.

Concerned.

Almost offended.

It was the expression of an innocent man who had just been accused of something unforgivable.

Dominic had seen that expression before.

Men wore it when they believed they still had time to lie.

“Daniel,” Dominic said.

“Yes, sir.”

“Take Mia and Harper upstairs.”

“Use the east guest suite.”

“Lock down the entire floor.”

“Two guards outside the door.”

“One inside the hallway.”

“No one enters without my approval.”

Mia lifted her head.

“Mr. Vale…”

Her voice was weak.

Dominic looked at her.

She tried to speak again, but her throat was too dry.

He crossed the cellar and knelt beside her.

“You’re safe now.”

Mia stared at him with frightened eyes.

“No.”

The word came out as a whisper.

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“What do you mean?”

Mia looked toward Nathan.

Nathan’s face did not change.

But Dominic saw the pulse move in his neck.

Mia tightened her arms around Harper.

“They know you’re back.”

Dominic followed her gaze.

“Who is they?”

Mia opened her mouth.

Then the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the cellar.

Harper screamed.

Dominic drew his gun before the sound finished leaving her throat.

“Down!”

A gunshot exploded from the hallway.

Wood shattered behind Dominic.

Daniel threw himself over Mia and Harper.

Marcus fired toward the doorway.

A second shot tore through the wine rack.

Bottles burst.

Glass crashed across the floor.

Dominic moved through the darkness with the certainty of a man who had survived rooms built to kill him.

He fired once.

A body slammed against the stone wall.

Then came running footsteps.

Fast.

Retreating toward the stairs.

“Marcus, go!”

Dominic heard Marcus charge into the hallway.

Daniel activated the emergency light on his vest.

A narrow white beam cut across the cellar.

Nathan was gone.

So was the shooter.

One of Dominic’s guards lay near the door.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Dominic crossed the room and checked the man’s neck.

No pulse.

The bullet had entered beneath the jaw.

Professional shot.

Planned angle.

Someone had known exactly where the guard would stand.

Daniel helped Mia to her feet.

Harper buried her face against her mother.

Dominic looked toward the open doorway.

“Nathan disappeared during the attack,” Daniel said.

Dominic rose slowly.

“He didn’t disappear.”

“He chose a side.”

Marcus returned less than a minute later.

His breathing was controlled, but anger burned in his eyes.

“Service tunnel behind the furnace room.”

“The exit was already open.”

“Vehicle tracks outside the western fence.”

Dominic stared at him.

“How long has that tunnel been compromised?”

“I don’t know.”

“That was not the question.”

Marcus lowered his head.

“Long enough for someone to prepare an escape.”

Dominic looked around the cellar.

The torn ropes.

The broken bottles.

The dead guard.

The new lock.

This had never been about hiding Mia for a few days.

Someone had built an operation beneath his home.

Someone had moved through his estate without fear.

Without resistance.

Without being noticed.

Or worse.

With help.

“Search every room,” Dominic said.

“Separate the staff.”

“Take their phones.”

“Pull the security recordings from the last thirty days.”

Marcus hesitated.

“The system may have been altered.”

“Then find who altered it.”

“Yes, sir.”

Dominic turned toward Mia.

She was barely standing.

But her eyes were clear now.

Focused.

Terrified.

“Who took you downstairs?” he asked.

Mia looked at Harper.

Dominic understood.

“Daniel, take Harper upstairs.”

Harper immediately clung tighter to her mother.

“No.”

Mia kissed the top of her head.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

“I’ll be right behind you.”

Harper began to cry again.

“You said that before.”

The words silenced everyone.

Mia closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was deeper than the bruises.

Dominic stepped closer.

“Harper.”

The child looked at him.

“I promise your mother will come upstairs.”

She stared at him for a long time.

Children did not trust titles.

They did not trust wealth.

They trusted what a person had done when they were afraid.

Dominic had opened the door.

That was enough.

Harper slowly released her mother.

Daniel carried her from the cellar.

When they were gone, Dominic turned back to Mia.

“Tell me everything.”

Mia took a breath.

“Claire asked me to help choose wine.”

“She said she wanted the wedding dinner to feel personal.”

“I came down with her.”

“Nathan was waiting inside.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“What happened?”

“They asked me what I had seen.”

“Seen where?”

“In your office.”

Dominic said nothing.

Mia continued.

“Three nights before you left for Atlantic City, I was cleaning the library.”

“I heard voices through the wall.”

“There’s a hidden passage behind the fireplace.”

Dominic knew about the passage.

Only four people were supposed to know it existed.

Dominic.

Nathan.

Daniel.

And Dominic’s late father.

Mia rubbed her injured wrists.

“I heard Nathan speaking with Claire.”

“They were talking about your accounts.”

“Your properties.”

“Judges.”

“Police officers.”

“They had lists.”

“They said everything would belong to them after the wedding.”

Dominic’s eyes became cold.

“What exactly did they say?”

Mia swallowed.

“Claire said once you signed the marriage documents, they could move the assets.”

“Nathan said the papers would not matter until you were dead.”

The silence that followed seemed to lower the temperature of the room.

Dominic had spent his life expecting bullets from strangers.

He had never expected a wedding ring to become the weapon.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The morning you left.”

Mia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Nathan stopped me near the garage.”

“He said Harper was alone in the playroom.”

“He showed me a picture of her through the security camera.”

“He said if I spoke to you, she would disappear before sunset.”

Dominic looked toward the broken doorway.

Nathan knew every camera.

Every schedule.

Every weakness.

Mia’s voice trembled.

“I thought I could find proof first.”

“But Claire realized I had heard them.”

“She brought me down here.”

“Nathan tied me up.”

“They kept asking what I knew.”

“And then?”

Mia stared at the stone floor.

“They asked where your wife hid the ledger.”

Dominic stopped breathing.

“My wife?”

Mia looked up.

“Your first wife.”

“Elena.”

The name had not been spoken in that cellar for years.

Not since the night a car bomb turned Dominic Vale into a widower.

Mia stepped closer.

“They said she died because she found the same thing I found.”

Dominic’s face became unreadable.

For seventeen years, he had believed Elena’s death was the work of a rival family.

He had destroyed that family.

Every operation.

Every alliance.

Every man responsible.

Or so he thought.

Mia reached into the torn lining of her uniform.

Her fingers shook.

She pulled out a small brass key.

“They searched me twice.”

“They never found this.”

Dominic took it.

A tiny number had been engraved on one side.

“What does it open?”

“I don’t know.”

“Elena hid it inside the cellar wall.”

“I found it while I was tied up.”

“There was a loose stone behind the wine rack.”

“She left something else too.”

Mia pointed toward the far end of the cellar.

Dominic followed her hand.

Behind the broken bottles, a section of the stone wall looked darker than the rest.

Newer mortar.

Poorly matched.

Someone had sealed something inside.

Dominic closed his fist around the key.

Nathan had betrayed him.

Claire planned to marry him.

May you like

Mia had nearly died.

And beneath the house where Dominic slept, his dead wife had left a secret waiting seventeen years to be found.
