Chapter 6 - THE GRAVE BENEATH THE ANGEL

The hidden tunnel was barely wide enough for one person.

Rose went first.

Mia followed.

Dominic entered last and pulled the broken stone panel closed behind them.

Darkness surrounded them.

The air smelled of wet earth.

Water ran beneath their shoes.

Above them, gunfire shook the convent.

Nathan’s men were moving through the chapel.

Marcus’s team fired back from the upper hall.

Every shot sounded close.

Too close.

Rose moved quickly despite years of confinement.

She knew every turn.

Every low ceiling.

Every section where the ground had collapsed.

Mia stayed near her.

“Why didn’t you escape through this tunnel?” she asked.

“I tried once.”

“What happened?”

“They were waiting at the cemetery.”

“Nathan broke two of my ribs.”

Rose’s voice remained steady.

“After that, he placed sensors inside the passage.”

Dominic stopped.

“Sensors?”

Rose pointed toward a thin red wire stretched across the floor.

Dominic crouched.

An explosive charge had been fixed beneath the wall.

Not large enough to destroy the convent.

Large enough to bury the tunnel.

He cut the trigger line.

“One,” he said.

Rose looked at him.

“There are four.”

They moved more slowly.

Dominic found the second device near a collapsed beam.

The third was hidden beneath standing water.

The fourth waited beside an iron ladder.

He disarmed each one.

Mia watched him work.

“You’ve done this before.”

“Many times.”

“What kind of businessman learns to defuse explosives?”

“The kind who wants to remain a businessman.”

Rose climbed the ladder.

A stone panel blocked the top.

She pushed once.

It did not move.

Then someone lifted it from above.

Daniel’s face appeared.

“Move.”

Rose climbed out.

Mia followed.

Dominic emerged last.

They stood inside the Vale family cemetery.

Rain fell heavily now.

Ancient trees leaned over rows of black headstones.

The convent rose beyond the wall.

Muzzle flashes flickered through its broken windows.

The angel with the shattered face stood above an open crypt.

Daniel closed the hidden entrance.

“Marcus has the east hall,” he said.

“Not for long.”

“Where are the vehicles?”

“Blocked.”

“Nathan’s men cut the road.”

Dominic looked across the cemetery.

“We go through the woods.”

Rose shook her head.

“He will expect that.”

“Then where?”

She pointed toward a small stone building at the far edge of the graves.

“The old caretaker’s house.”

“There is a radio inside.”

“A real radio.”

“Not connected to Nathan’s network.”

They ran between the graves.

Bullets struck the cemetery wall behind them.

Nathan’s men had seen movement.

Daniel turned and fired.

One gunman fell from the convent steps.

Another took cover behind a stone cross.

Dominic pushed Mia toward the caretaker’s house.

“Inside.”

Rose reached the door first.

It was locked.

She fired once into the handle.

The door swung open.

They entered.

The building contained a desk.

A rusted stove.

Several broken chairs.

And an old military radio covered with dust.

Rose removed the cloth.

Mia stared at it.

“You kept this here?”

“Samuel did.”

Dominic closed the shutters.

“Who can it reach?”

“Someone Nathan never found.”

Rose adjusted the frequency.

Static filled the room.

She turned several dials.

Then spoke into the microphone.

“Blue bird calling Black Chapel.”

“Blue bird calling Black Chapel.”

Silence.

Gunfire continued outside.

Rose tried again.

“Samuel is dead.”

“Elena is dead.”

“The daughter has returned.”

Static.

Then a man answered.

“Confirm the daughter.”

Rose looked at Mia.

Mia did not understand.

Rose whispered.

“Tell him what your father said before thunderstorms.”

Mia stared at the microphone.

A childhood memory returned.

Her father closing the windows.

Her mother lighting candles.

His hand resting on her head.

She leaned toward the radio.

“The sky makes noise because it is afraid of the ground.”

The man on the other end remained silent.

Then he said one word.

“Confirmed.”

Dominic looked at Rose.

“Who is he?”

“The last man Samuel trusted.”

The voice returned.

“Location?”

“St. Agnes.”

“Hostiles?”

“At least twelve.”

“Vale?”

Rose looked at Dominic.

“With us.”

The voice became harder.

“Which Vale?”

“Dominic.”

A longer pause.

Then the man said.

“I have waited seventeen years to hear that name beside the truth.”

The transmission ended.

Mia turned toward her mother.

“Who did you call?”

Before Rose could answer, the caretaker’s window exploded.

Daniel dragged her down.

Bullets tore through the room.

Dominic returned fire through the broken shutters.

One attacker fell behind a headstone.

Another moved toward the rear door.

Daniel shot through the wood.

A body collapsed outside.

“Back exit,” Dominic ordered.

They moved toward the rear.

The door opened before Daniel reached it.

Nathan stood on the other side.

He held a pistol against Marcus’s head.

Marcus’s hands were tied behind his back.

Blood covered one side of his face.

Four armed men surrounded them.

“Drop the weapons,” Nathan said.

Dominic aimed at him.

Nathan pressed the barrel harder against Marcus’s temple.

“You can shoot me.”

“But Marcus dies first.”

Marcus looked at Dominic.

“Do it.”

Nathan smiled.

“That is loyalty.”

“A beautiful disease.”

Rose raised her weapon.

Nathan’s men aimed at Mia.

“Put it down, Rose.”

“You already lost one child to this family.”

“Do not lose another.”

Rose’s hand trembled.

Mia stepped in front of her.

“Don’t.”

Nathan looked at Mia.

For the first time, his composure slipped.

“You were supposed to remain a maid.”

Mia stared at him.

“You were supposed to remain a friend.”

Something in Nathan’s face hardened.

“Dominic was never my friend.”

“I built his empire.”

“I cleaned his mistakes.”

“I buried his enemies.”

“And what did I receive?”

“A seat beside the throne.”

“Never the throne itself.”

Dominic lowered his gun slightly.

“You killed Elena because you wanted my chair?”

Nathan laughed.

“No.”

“I killed Elena because she found proof that your father had already chosen me.”

Dominic froze.

Rose closed her eyes.

Nathan saw the reaction.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Your father did not trust you.”

“He thought you were reckless.”

“Emotional.”

“Weak after Elena.”

“He planned to place me in control until you proved yourself.”

“Then Elena discovered the agreement.”

“She threatened to expose everything.”

Dominic looked at Rose.

“Is that true?”

Rose said nothing.

Nathan smiled.

“Ask her.”

Rose’s voice came quietly.

“Your father signed a succession order.”

“He named Nathan temporary head of the organization.”

Dominic felt the world shift beneath him.

His father had raised him to inherit everything.

Trained him.

Punished him.

Tested him.

And secretly prepared another man to take control.

Nathan continued.

“Elena believed your father intended to remove you permanently.”

“She convinced Samuel to steal the ledger.”

“Samuel refused to hand it to me.”

“So your father called him a traitor.”

Mia looked at Rose.

“My father was innocent.”

“Yes,” Rose whispered.

Nathan shrugged.

“Innocence is a story told by the loser.”

Dominic’s eyes remained on Rose.

“Did my father order Elena’s death?”

Rose looked at him.

“No.”

Nathan answered for her.

“He did not have the courage.”

“So I made the decision for him.”

Dominic raised his weapon again.

Nathan moved Marcus closer.

“You kill me now, and you never learn why your father died.”

Dominic stopped.

His father had suffered a sudden stroke six years after Elena’s death.

At least that was what every doctor had said.

Nathan watched Dominic understand.

“There it is.”

“That little doubt.”

“The same doubt Elena saw.”

“I did not merely serve your father.”

“I replaced him long before his heart stopped.”

Mia looked toward the cemetery.

Movement appeared between the trees.

Dark figures.

Silent.

Approaching from every direction.

Nathan’s men had not noticed yet.

Rose saw them.

Her face changed.

The radio call had been answered.

The man from Black Chapel had arrived.

Dominic kept Nathan talking.

“How did my father die?”

Nathan smiled.

“Slowly.”

“Just like his empire.”

A shot cracked through the rain.

The gunman beside Mia fell.

Then another shot.

A second attacker collapsed.

Men emerged from the trees wearing gray coats and no insignia.

They moved with military precision.

Nathan spun.

Marcus drove his head backward into Nathan’s face.

The pistol fired.

The bullet missed Marcus and struck the ceiling.

Dominic crossed the room in two steps.

He hit Nathan hard enough to throw him against the wall.

Daniel attacked the remaining guard.

Mia pulled Rose to the floor.

Gunfire exploded around the caretaker’s house.

The battle lasted less than thirty seconds.

Then silence returned.

Nathan lay beneath Dominic.

Blood ran from his mouth.

Dominic’s hand closed around his throat.

Nathan smiled through broken teeth.

“You still need me.”

“No.”

Dominic tightened his grip.

“I need the truth.”

“That is not the same thing.”

A man entered through the rear door.

He was tall.

Gray-haired.

A scar ran from his left eye to his jaw.

He carried an old Vale signet ring on a chain around his neck.

Rose looked at him.

“Gabriel.”

The man nodded.

Then he turned toward Dominic.

“My name is Gabriel Shaw.”

“I served your uncle.”

“I protected Elena.”

“And I failed them both.”

Dominic released Nathan and stood.

Gabriel looked down at the traitor.

“But I know where the ledger is.”

Nathan’s smile vanished.

Gabriel continued.

“And I know what it proves.”

Rain struck the broken windows.

No one moved.

“The ledger does not only expose Nathan,” Gabriel said.

“It proves that half of Dominic Vale’s empire was built on a lie.”

Dominic stared at him.

“What lie?”

Gabriel removed the ring from around his neck.

Then he handed it to Mia.

“Samuel Vale was not the younger brother.”

“He was the firstborn son.”

The room became silent.

Gabriel looked directly at Dominic.

“And by the laws your grandfather wrote…”

“The Vale empire never belonged to your father.”

“It belonged to Samuel.”

May you like

His eyes moved to Mia.

“And now it belongs to her.”
