Chapter 7 - THE HEIR NO ONE EXPECTED

No one spoke for several seconds.

Rain struck the roof of the caretaker’s house.

Water ran through the broken window and spread across the floor.

Nathan lay against the wall with blood on his mouth.

Marcus stood over him with a pistol aimed at his chest.

Gabriel Shaw remained near the door.

And Mia held the Vale signet ring in her injured hand.

The ring looked too heavy for something so small.

A black stone sat inside a band of old gold.

The Vale crest had been carved into its surface.

A wolf standing over a broken crown.

Mia stared at it.

Then she looked at Gabriel.

“You are saying my father owned Dominic’s empire.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“No.”

“I am saying he was supposed to inherit it.”

“That does not mean he wanted it.”

Dominic watched Mia carefully.

Most people would have reacted with greed.

Shock.

Calculation.

Questions about money.

Power.

Property.

Mia asked only one thing.

“Why did he leave?”

Gabriel looked toward Rose.

Rose lowered her weapon.

“Because he learned what the Vale empire truly required.”

Mia’s face tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Gabriel stepped inside and closed the damaged door behind him.

“Your grandfather had two sons.”

“Samuel was born first.”

“Victor was born four years later.”

Dominic recognized his father’s name.

Hearing it spoken in that room made him feel like a ghost had entered.

“Samuel was expected to become head of the family,” Gabriel continued.

“He was intelligent.”

“Patient.”

“And unlike Victor, he did not enjoy fear.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“My father did what was necessary.”

Gabriel looked at him.

“That is what powerful men say when they no longer wish to remember what they did.”

Daniel moved toward Dominic.

Not to restrain him.

Only to remain close enough if Dominic lost control.

Gabriel continued.

“Samuel believed the organization could become legitimate.”

“He wanted to move the family into shipping, construction, and finance.”

“Victor believed respect came from blood.”

“The brothers fought for years.”

“Then your grandfather became ill.”

Rose sat beside Mia.

“Victor produced documents claiming Samuel had stolen from the family.”

“They were false.”

“Your father knew that?”

Dominic asked.

Rose nodded.

“He created them.”

Mia closed her eyes.

Her father had spent a lifetime carrying the name Carter.

She had believed he was simply private.

Now she understood.

Samuel had not hidden because he was ashamed of his family.

He had hidden because his family wanted him erased.

“What happened after the accusation?” Mia asked.

Gabriel answered.

“Victor called a family council.”

“Samuel refused to defend himself.”

“Everyone believed that meant he was guilty.”

“But he refused because defending himself would have exposed Rose.”

Mia turned toward her mother.

Rose’s eyes filled with pain.

“I was working in the Vale household.”

“Samuel and I had been meeting in secret.”

“I was already pregnant with you.”

Mia stared at her.

“You never told me.”

“I wanted you to have a life without them.”

Rose looked toward Dominic.

“Without any of them.”

Dominic accepted the anger.

He had not created the old betrayal.

But he had benefited from it.

Every mansion.

Every account.

Every man who lowered his head when Dominic entered a room.

All of it had been inherited through a lie.

Gabriel looked at the ring in Mia’s hand.

“Samuel chose exile.”

“He took Rose and disappeared.”

“Victor took the empire.”

“And your grandfather died believing his firstborn son had betrayed him.”

Nathan laughed from the floor.

Everyone turned.

“You tell that story beautifully.”

Marcus pushed the pistol against his forehead.

Nathan smiled anyway.

“But you forgot the most important part.”

Gabriel’s face hardened.

“What part?”

“Samuel came back.”

Mia looked at Rose.

Rose lowered her eyes.

Dominic saw the answer before anyone spoke.

“When?” he asked.

“After Elena contacted him,” Rose said.

“Elena found the original succession records.”

“She discovered Victor had forged Samuel’s confession.”

“Elena believed Samuel could return and challenge your father.”

Dominic looked at Mia.

“My wife was trying to give the empire to your father.”

“No,” Rose said.

“She was trying to give Dominic a choice.”

Dominic turned toward her.

“What choice?”

“To expose Victor.”

“To restore Samuel’s name.”

“And to force the family to abandon the old structure.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Elena did not want Samuel on the throne.”

“She wanted the throne destroyed.”

Nathan’s smile widened.

“That was why she had to die.”

Dominic crossed the room.

He grabbed Nathan by the coat and lifted him from the floor.

“You speak about her again, and I will remove your tongue.”

Nathan’s eyes remained calm.

“You still think anger makes you strong.”

“No.”

Dominic slammed him against the wall.

“Anger makes me honest.”

Gabriel stepped between them.

“We need him alive.”

Dominic looked at him.

“For what?”

“The ledger proves financial crimes.”

“Payments.”

“Murder orders.”

“Political corruption.”

“But Nathan knows which names are still active.”

Nathan laughed.

“He means he needs me to tell him how many people in your empire are already mine.”

Dominic released him.

Nathan dropped to the floor.

Marcus tied his wrists with plastic restraints.

Dominic looked toward Gabriel.

“How many?”

“At least forty percent of your senior network may be compromised.”

Daniel cursed under his breath.

Marcus looked at Dominic.

“If that is true, the estate is no longer secure.”

“Mia’s daughter is there.”

Mia was already moving toward the door.

Dominic caught her arm.

She turned on him.

“Harper is in that house.”

“Daniel left men with her.”

“Nathan bought men inside your bedroom.”

“Do not tell me she is safe.”

Dominic released her.

She was right.

Trust had already failed them once.

It could fail again.

He pressed the communication device in his ear.

“Estate command.”

Static answered.

Dominic tried again.

“Estate command, respond.”

Nothing.

Daniel lifted his radio.

“No signal.”

Marcus checked his phone.

“Cell service is down.”

Nathan began to laugh.

Softly at first.

Then louder.

Dominic turned.

“What did you do?”

Nathan leaned his head against the wall.

“I did not do anything.”

“Claire did.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

He had left Claire locked inside the library.

Two guards outside.

One camera in the hall.

No weapon.

No phone.

But Claire did not need any of those things if the guards belonged to her.

Mia stepped toward Nathan.

“What did she plan?”

Nathan looked at her.

“The girl was always insurance.”

Mia struck him across the face.

The sound cracked through the room.

Nathan smiled at her.

“You have Samuel’s temper.”

Mia hit him again.

This time Dominic did not stop her.

“What did Claire plan?” Mia demanded.

Nathan spat blood onto the floor.

“She planned to take Harper before Dominic returned.”

“Where?”

“I do not know.”

Mia pulled the pistol from her waistband.

She pressed it beneath Nathan’s chin.

“Then remember.”

Rose grabbed her wrist.

“Mia.”

“He locked me underground.”

“He threatened my daughter.”

“He kept you in a prison for years.”

“I know.”

Rose’s voice broke.

“I know exactly what he is.”

“Then let me kill him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he wants you to.”

Mia stared at her.

Rose slowly lowered the weapon.

“He wants you angry.”

“He wants you to become what he says the Vale family always becomes.”

“He wants to prove Samuel was wrong to leave.”

Mia’s breathing remained hard.

But she lowered the pistol.

Nathan looked disappointed.

Dominic noticed.

Nathan had spent seventeen years turning grief into weapons.

Elena’s death.

Victor’s fear.

Samuel’s exile.

Mia’s rage.

Harper’s innocence.

Everyone became something he could use.

Dominic looked at Marcus.

“Take him with us.”

Nathan’s smile returned.

“You think you can reach the estate in time?”

Dominic walked toward him.

“No.”

Nathan’s smile faded slightly.

Dominic removed the black Vale ring from Mia’s hand.

He placed it on his own finger.

Then he raised Gabriel’s radio.

“Black Chapel.”

A voice answered.

“Listening.”

Dominic looked directly at Nathan.

“Activate every Vale reserve team between Scranton and Hudson Valley.”

Gabriel’s men looked at one another.

The order had not come from Gabriel.

It had come from a man wearing the original signet.

The voice on the radio hesitated.

Then asked.

“Under whose authority?”

Dominic looked at Mia.

The empire might never have belonged to him.

But Harper was still inside his house.

And until she was safe, Dominic would use every piece of power the lie had given him.

“Under the authority of Samuel Vale’s heir.”

He handed the radio to Mia.

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the device.

Then at Rose.

Then at Dominic.

“I do not know what to say.”

Dominic’s voice was calm.

“Tell them to bring your daughter home.”

Mia raised the radio.

“This is Mia Carter.”

Her voice trembled once.

Then became steady.

“Claire Bennett has taken my child.”

“Stop every road.”

“Search every vehicle.”

“And if anyone tries to move Harper out of New York…”

She looked at Nathan.

“Make sure they never reach the state line.”

The answer came immediately.

“Yes, Ms. Vale.”

Mia closed her eyes.

May you like

For the first time in her life, the name was hers.

And hundreds of miles away, inside Dominic’s estate, Claire Bennett was already walking Harper toward a waiting car.
