Chapter 3: The Price of Truth

Three months later, everything had changed.

Igor sold his expensive car.

He took extra work.

He created a repayment plan with the people he owed.

It wasn’t easy.

There were arguments.

There were difficult days.

But for the first time, he was facing the consequences instead of hiding from them.

Tamara, however, never apologized.

Until one day, she came to Vera’s house again.

But this time, she wasn’t confident.

She looked tired.

“I owe you an apology,” Tamara said quietly.

Vera looked surprised.

Tamara sat down.

“I thought protecting my son meant saving him from every problem.”

She sighed.

“But I was actually teaching him to run away from responsibility.”

Vera said nothing.

“I blamed you because it was easier than admitting Igor was wrong.”

A long silence passed.

Then Vera poured her a cup of tea.

Not because she had forgotten.

Because she had moved forward.

A year later, Vera and Igor stood in front of their small renovated home.

The debt was gone.

Their marriage was stronger.

And the secret that almost destroyed them had become the lesson that saved them.

Igor looked at his wife.

“I still can’t believe you stayed.”

Vera smiled.

“I didn’t stay because of the debt.”

She looked at him.

“I stayed because you finally chose honesty.”

Behind them, the old kitchen table remained.

The same table where Tamara had once demanded that Vera pay for someone else’s mistake.

But now it held something different.

A family dinner.

A fresh beginning.

And a reminder that love is not proven by carrying someone’s burden blindly.

It is proven when two people choose to face the truth together.

The debt was never hers.

But the strength to overcome it became theirs.
