Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Debt

The next morning, Vera made one decision.
She would not fight against Igor.
She would fight against the lie.
She asked him to invite Larisa and Tamara over.
When they arrived, both women expected Vera to apologize.
Instead, Vera placed several documents on the table.
Larisa looked confused.
“What is this?”
“The complete record of the money.”
Larisa’s face became pale.
Tamara immediately became defensive.
“Why are you interrogating my daughter?”
“Because everyone keeps saying this is a family matter.”
Vera looked at both of them.
“So let’s finally treat it like one.”
Larisa remained silent.
Then Vera asked the question nobody wanted to answer.
“Where did the money actually go?”
Larisa hesitated.
“I… invested some of it.”
“Some?”
The silence grew heavier.
Finally, Larisa admitted the truth.
The business had failed.
Most of the money was gone.
But instead of telling Igor, she allowed him to continue believing that success was just around the corner.
Tamara immediately interrupted.
“Enough. Mistakes happen.”
Vera looked at her.
“Yes. They do.”
She nodded.
“But mistakes become disasters when everyone else is forced to pay for them.”
Igor sat quietly.
For the first time, he realized something painful.
His mother had never asked whether Vera was willing to sacrifice.
She had simply decided Vera would.
That night, Igor apologized.
Not with excuses.
Not with promises.
With honesty.
“I failed you,” he said.
Vera looked at him.
“You failed because you wanted to save everyone.”
She softened slightly.
“But you forgot that lying to your wife destroys the one person standing beside you.”
Igor held her hand.
“I’ll fix this.”
May you like
Vera nodded.
“Then start by taking responsibility.”
