Chapter 1: The Paper That Changed Everything

The room fell silent.
Tamara stared at the single sheet of paper Vera had placed on the table.
For the first time since she entered the house, she looked uncertain.
“What is this?” Tamara asked, trying to sound annoyed instead of nervous.
Vera didn’t answer immediately.
She simply pushed the paper closer.
“Read it.”
Tamara grabbed the document and scanned the first few lines.
Her expression changed.
Slowly.
The confidence disappeared from her eyes.
“This… this is impossible.”
“No,” Vera replied calmly. “It’s just something you didn’t expect.”
The paper was a copy of a bank transfer record.
Three months earlier, Igor had transferred a large amount of money to Larisa’s account.
The same amount that had later become the “family debt.”
Tamara swallowed.
“So what? Igor helped his sister. That’s what family does.”
Vera nodded.
“Exactly. Family helps.”
She leaned forward slightly.
“But family also tells the truth.”
Tamara placed the paper back on the table.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.”
“Am I?”
Vera’s voice remained soft.
“Your son borrowed money from people. He risked our financial security. And the reason was not an emergency. It was because Larisa wanted to start a business.”
“She needed support!”
“And I understand that.”
Vera looked directly at her.
“But why did nobody tell me?”
Tamara looked away.
That silence was the answer.
For months, Igor had carried this secret.
And now Vera finally understood why.
The debt wasn’t just about money.
It was about trust.
That evening, Igor came home late.
He stopped when he saw Vera sitting in the living room with the documents on the table.
His face immediately changed.
“You talked to my mother.”
Vera looked at him.
“Yes.”
A long silence followed.
“I wanted to tell you,” Igor said quietly.
“But you didn’t.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That you would think I was irresponsible.”
Vera took a deep breath.
“I don’t think you’re a bad person, Igor.”
She paused.
“But you made a bad decision.”
Those words hurt him more than anger would have.
Because they were true.
“I thought I was helping my family.”

“And what about the family you created with me?”
Igor had no answer.
