Chapter 8 - THE PATERNITY TRAP

The sentence destroyed me.

If it’s mine.

I had never been unfaithful.

Not once.

But Marcus didn’t need truth.

He needed suspicion.

Dana understood before I did.

“He’s preparing a paternity challenge.”

“Why?”

“To discredit you.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

We looked at her.

“It’s bigger.”

“How?”

“Hale family trusts.”

Claire explained.

Marcus’s father had created an inheritance structure.

Control of certain Hale assets transferred differently if Marcus had a biological child.

If our baby was his, the trust changed.

If the baby wasn’t his, Marcus kept complete control.

Dana asked,

“So he wants the child and doesn’t want the child?”

“He wants whichever version benefits him most.”

That sounded exactly like Marcus.

People were never people to him.

We were leverage.

That afternoon, police arrested Vanessa.

Not for attempted murder.

Not yet.

For assault.

She screamed at reporters as officers walked her into the station.

“I didn’t touch her!”

The video was already public.

Everyone could see she was lying.

Marcus immediately distanced himself.

His statement called Vanessa “a family acquaintance.”

She lasted six hours.

Then she asked for a lawyer.

Not Gregory Sloan.

A public defender.

That told us Marcus had abandoned her.

At 8:40 p.m., Vanessa offered to cooperate.

Dana and I were allowed to watch part of the recorded interview from another room.

Vanessa looked wrecked.

Mascara gone.

Hair messy.

No designer coat.

No Marcus.

“What did Marcus tell you to do?” the detective asked.

“He said Nora would yell.”

“Did he tell you to touch her?”

“No.”

The detective waited.

Vanessa looked at the camera.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He said bump her.”

“How hard?”

“He didn’t say.”

“Why?”

“To make her react.”

“Why?”

“So the judge would see she was unstable.”

“What judge?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Her father.”

I gripped the table.

So she knew too.

The detective leaned closer.

“Did Marcus tell you Judge Bennett was Nora’s father?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

My chest burned.

“Did he say why it mattered?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Then began crying.

“He said Nora hated her father.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“He wanted Elias to reject her again.”

My father looked sick.

“Why?”

The detective asked.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because Marcus said if Nora believed even her own father was against her, she’d give up.”

I covered my mouth.

There it was.

Not just legal strategy.

Psychological warfare.

Marcus had arranged for me to see my father again because he expected the reunion to break me.

The detective asked,

“Did Marcus ever discuss Nora’s mother?”

Vanessa went silent.

“Ms. Reed?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Vanessa looked straight into the camera.

“He said Nora’s mother made the same mistake Nora was making.”

“What mistake?”

“Thinking evidence would save her.”

The room went cold.

Then Vanessa said,

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“He told me if Nora wouldn’t accept the divorce settlement…”

She stopped.

The detective waited.

Vanessa whispered,

“…the hospital already had instructions.”

My hand moved protectively over my belly.

“What instructions?” the detective asked.

May you like

Vanessa’s answer nearly made me collapse.

“To report Nora as a danger to her own baby after delivery.”
