Chapter 12 - THE CABIN BY THE RIVER

Police traced Crane’s call.

An abandoned motel.

He was found alive.

Shot through the shoulder.

Terrified.

And ready to talk.

He admitted taking payments from Richard Hale for years.

Then Marcus.

He admitted manipulating judicial assignments.

Destroying records.

Passing information.

But he insisted Governor Vale was the one who ordered Claire taken.

“Why?”

The detective asked.

“Because Claire had recordings.”

“Of Vale?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Crane gave them an address.

A hunting cabin beside the Hudson River.

Police moved immediately.

Dana told me to stay home.

My father agreed.

I did not argue.

I had Grace now.

My daughter needed one parent who didn’t run toward danger.

Three hours later, Dana called.

“They found her.”

I almost dropped the phone.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Claire had been tied to a chair in the basement.

Dehydrated.

Bruised.

But alive.

Two men guarding the property were arrested.

One worked for a security company linked to Vale.

That ended the governor.

By midnight, federal prosecutors announced charges.

Conspiracy.

Witness tampering.

Obstruction.

Bribery.

Vale resigned the next morning.

Marcus tried to separate himself.

He failed.

Claire testified before a grand jury.

Crane testified too.

Vanessa accepted a plea deal.

Then came the final file.

The one Claire had hidden separately.

A video recording from Marcus’s private office.

He was speaking to Dr. Pike.

Marcus said,

“Once Nora gives birth, I need forty-eight hours.”

“For what?”

“To establish instability.”

“And if she refuses observation?”

“Drug her if you have to.”

I stopped the video.

My father walked outside.

He was gone for almost an hour.

When he returned, his eyes were red.

“I want to kill him.”

I had never heard my father say anything like that.

“So do I.”

He looked at me.

“But we won’t.”

“No.”

“Because he’d understand violence.”

“Yes.”

“What he won’t understand is losing everything legally.”

For the first time in years, we smiled at the same thing.

The indictment came two days later.

Marcus Hale was arrested outside Hale Tower.

No private entrance.

No quiet surrender.

Federal agents handcuffed him beneath the company name carved into the building.

Reporters shouted.

Employees watched.

Marcus looked furious.

Then he saw me standing across the street with Dana.

I had not planned to be there.

But I needed to see it.

Marcus stared at me.

His lips moved.

I knew the words.

“You did this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I said it loud enough for him to hear.

“You did.”

Agents placed him in the car.

I thought that would be the end.

Then Dana’s phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

And looked at me.

“Nora…”

“What?”

“They found another recording.”

“Of Marcus?”

May you like

“No.”

“Your father.”
