Chapter 11 - THE MAN ABOVE MARCUS

Governor Thomas Vale denied everything.
His office called the photograph “an innocent business event.”
Then Claire’s backup files produced an audio recording.
Vale’s voice.
Marcus’s voice.
A conversation from six months earlier.
“You keep your divorce quiet,” Vale said.
“And I’ll make sure the zoning investigation disappears.”
Marcus replied,
“I need more than zoning.”
“What?”
“Judicial access.”
Vale laughed.
“You’re becoming your father.”
Marcus answered,
“My father was sloppy.”
That recording went federal.
Within forty-eight hours, federal agents raided three offices.
The governor’s chief of staff resigned.
Two county officials were arrested.
Robert Crane disappeared.
A warrant was issued.
The entire state seemed to be watching.
And Marcus did what he always did when cornered.
He came after me.
Not physically.
Publicly.
An interview appeared online.
Marcus sat across from a famous television host.
He looked devastated.
“My wife has been manipulated by people seeking to destroy me.”
The host asked,
“Did you abuse Nora?”
“Never.”
“Did you isolate her financially?”
“I protected her during periods of instability.”
“Did you have an affair?”
Marcus paused.
“I made mistakes.”
That was calculated.
Admit the smaller sin.
Deny the bigger one.
Then came the real attack.
“Do you believe Nora is mentally well?”
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I believe she needs help.”
I watched from my father’s living room.
My hands shook.
Then Marcus said,
“I also have serious questions about whether the child she gave birth to is mine.”
I stood.
Dana grabbed the remote.
“Turn it off.”
“No.”
I kept watching.
Marcus looked straight into the camera.
“I requested DNA testing months ago.”
That was a lie.
But it didn’t matter.
The headline exploded anyway.
BILLIONAIRE QUESTIONS PATERNITY.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I called Dana.
“Do the test.”
“Nora—”
“Do it.”
Three days later, the result came back.
99.99 percent.
Marcus was Grace’s biological father.
Dana smiled.
“He just buried himself.”
But I was looking at another page.
The trust documents.
Because Claire had been right.
Grace’s birth triggered a transfer.
A massive block of Hale family shares moved into a protected trust for Marcus’s biological child.
Marcus could manage it only if he retained legal standing as Grace’s father.
If convicted of certain crimes involving Grace or me, control transferred to an independent trustee.
Marcus wasn’t fighting for our daughter.
He was fighting for the company.
The same company built on the corruption that killed my mother.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
A man whispered,
“Nora Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Robert Crane.”
Dana rushed toward me.
I put the call on speaker.
Crane sounded terrified.
“I know where Claire Donnelly is.”
“Where?”
“She’s alive.”
“Who has her?”
Crane started crying.
Then he said,
“Marcus doesn’t know.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Crane whispered,
May you like
“Governor Vale.”
And before we could ask anything else, a gunshot exploded through the phone.
