Chapter 3 — The School Counselor’s Warning

Chapter 3 — The School Counselor’s Warning

Richard finally listened to the voicemail from Maya’s counselor, Mrs. Gable.

The message was worse than he expected.

“Mr. Sterling, Maya collapsed during recess. She has been showing signs of extreme stress and malnutrition.”

Richard’s hands tightened.

Malnutrition.

His daughter.

Living in a mansion.

Surrounded by expensive food.

But starving.

The next morning, he went directly to Maya’s school.

Mrs. Gable showed him drawings Maya had made.

One picture showed a family dinner.

Richard.

Sarah, his late wife.

Maya.

And a dark figure standing outside the room.

“Who is this?” Richard asked.

The counselor hesitated.

“Maya said that was the person who replaced her mother.”

Richard looked at the drawing.

And realized his daughter had been silently screaming for help.
