Chapter 2 — The Girl Who Learned to Disappear

Chapter 2 — The Girl Who Learned to Disappear
Richard carried Maya away from the pantry and into his private study.
He wrapped her in his jacket.
“You’re freezing,” he whispered.
Maya looked down.
“I’m sorry, Daddy.”
Those three words broke his heart.
“Sorry for what?”
“For making trouble.”
Richard stared at her.
“You are never trouble.”
But Maya didn’t believe him.
She had learned something no child should ever learn.
She had learned how to become invisible.
She revealed the small rules Eleanor had created.
No eating at the main table.
No touching expensive furniture.
No entering the living room when guests were there.
No speaking unless spoken to.
Richard felt his anger growing.
“How long has this been happening?”
Maya stayed silent.
Then she whispered:
“Since the wedding.”
Richard froze.
The wedding.
The day he thought he was giving his daughter a new mother.
May you like
The day he thought he was saving his family.
But he had actually invited the person who would break it.
