Chapter 6 - THE SISTER THEY NEVER KNEW

Nobody spoke for a long time.
The truth was too big.
Too impossible.
Laura looked at Claire.
“You’re saying you’re our sister?”
Claire nodded.
“Half-sister.”
Mark sat down.
His entire world had shifted.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“No, Dad would have told us.”
Claire looked at him sadly.
“Your father tried.”
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a letter.
“He wrote this for you.”
Mark recognized the handwriting instantly.
Their father.
Again.
Another secret.
Laura watched as Mark opened it.
His hands trembled.
The first line read:
“My son, if you are reading this, then I am already gone, and you finally know the truth I was too afraid to tell you.”
Mark continued reading.
His expression changed with every sentence.
Then he stopped.
“What?”
Laura moved closer.
“What does it say?”
Mark looked up.
His eyes were full of fear.
“Dad didn’t sell the house.”
Confusion filled the room.
“What?”
Mark held the letter.
“He transferred ownership.”
“To who?”
Mark looked at Claire.
“No one.”
A pause.
Then:
“To protect us.”
Evelyn frowned.
“I don’t understand.”
Mark looked at the final page.
And whispered:
“Because Dad knew someone was planning to kill him.”
Suddenly, the lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
A shadow moved outside the window.
Claire’s face changed.
“He found us.”
Laura looked terrified.
“Who?”
Claire whispered the name.
“The person who started all of this.”
A loud crash came from downstairs.
The front door had been forced open.
Someone was inside.
Mark grabbed the letter.
“We need to run.”
But before they could move, a voice echoed from the hallway.
“You children have caused enough trouble.”
Laura froze.
Because she knew that voice.
It belonged to someone they trusted their entire lives.
Someone who had been standing beside their family for decades.
Someone they never suspected.
Their mother’s closest friend.

And she was holding a gun.
