Chapter 11 - THE LAST CONFESSION

Nobody spoke after the recording ended.
Because every person in that room had the same thought.
Who was sitting at their dinner table?
Their mother?
Rebecca?
Someone else?
Laura looked at Mark.
“You knew about this recording?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
For once, she believed him.
Evelyn sat against the wall.
“This is insane.”
Claire looked at the files.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“This isn’t insane.”
Her eyes filled with anger.
“This is what happens when powerful people spend decades hiding the truth.”
Mark opened another box.
Inside was a small video tape.
Old.
Dusty.
Labelled:
FINAL MESSAGE.
Rebecca stared at it.
“No.”
Mark looked at her.
“What?”
She stepped backward.
“Your father promised me he destroyed that.”
Laura turned.
“What does that mean?”
Rebecca looked defeated.
“It means your father knew he was going to die.”
They found an old player in the room.
After several attempts, the screen turned on.
Their father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Everyone stopped breathing.
“Laura. Mark. Evelyn.”
His voice was calm.
“If you’re watching this, I failed.”
Laura’s eyes filled with tears.
“Dad…”
The recording continued.
“I spent my life believing I could protect everyone by keeping secrets.”
He looked down.
“I was wrong.”
The image shook.
Then he said:
“There are things you need to know about your mother.”
Laura looked away.
Her heart couldn’t take another betrayal.
“Sarah loved you more than anything.”
Everyone froze.
“But she made a terrible choice.”
Mark leaned closer.
“What choice?”
His father continued.
“She tried to erase the past.”
A pause.
“She believed destroying the evidence would save our family.”
Claire whispered:
“My father’s evidence.”
The recording continued.
“But someone used her mistake.”
The screen flickered.
“And that person has been controlling everything ever since.”
The video stopped.
Everyone stared.
“Who?” Evelyn whispered.
Then the tape restarted.
A hidden message appeared.
Not from their father.
From someone else.
A woman’s voice.
A voice they recognized.
Their mother.
Sarah.
“If my children are seeing this…”
Everyone froze.
Her voice trembled.
“I need you to understand one thing.”
A pause.
“I never killed Daniel Cross.”
Laura closed her eyes.
Relief.
But then Sarah said:
“But I know who did.”
The screen went black.
A moment later, one final image appeared.
A photograph.
Taken the night Daniel Cross disappeared.
In the picture were four people.
Daniel.
Sarah.
Their father.
And…
Someone standing behind them.
Someone they all knew.
Someone who had been helping them uncover the truth.
Claire stared at the image.
“No…”
Mark looked at her.
“What?”
Claire pointed.
Her finger trembled.
“The person who killed my father…”
May you like
She whispered:
“Is in this room.”
