Chapter 10 - THE NAME INSIDE THE ENVELOPE

Mark had faced anger.
He had faced betrayal.
He had faced the impossible truth that his father had hidden an entire life from him.
But nothing prepared him for the name written on that piece of paper.
His hands shook.
Laura noticed immediately.
“Mark…”
He didn’t answer.
“Who is it?”
Slowly, he lifted his eyes.
The fear on his face was worse than any words.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Tell us.”
Mark looked down at the paper again.
Then he whispered:
“It’s not a person.”
Everyone frowned.
“What does that mean?” Claire asked.
Mark handed the letter to them.
At the bottom of the page was a single word.
BENNETT.
Laura stared.
“That’s our name.”
Mark nodded.
“Exactly.”
Nobody understood.
Until Rebecca spoke.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Oh my God.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“What?”
Rebecca looked at the letter.
“Your father wasn’t talking about one traitor.”
She swallowed.
“He was talking about the Bennett family.”
The room went silent.
Laura shook her head.
“No. That doesn’t make sense.”
Rebecca looked at her.
“It does if the entire family was built on a lie.”
Mark grabbed another file from the hidden room.
Inside were old financial records.
Property transfers.
Secret accounts.
Names they didn’t recognize.
Then he saw something.
A signature.
His father’s.
But underneath it was another signature.
Their grandfather’s.
The date was forty years earlier.
“This started before Dad.”
Claire moved closer.
“What started?”
Mark looked at the documents.
“The Bennett fortune.”
Evelyn whispered:
“So everything we own…”
Mark nodded.
“Was never really ours.”
A sudden noise came from upstairs.
A heavy object falling.
Everyone froze.
Someone was still inside the house.
Again.
Rebecca grabbed the gun she had dropped earlier.
“We have to go.”
Laura looked at her.
“You don’t get to order us around anymore.”
Rebecca stared back.
“Then listen as someone who knows what happens next.”
“What happens next?”
Rebecca’s face turned pale.
“They come for the children.”
The words had barely left her mouth when the basement door slammed shut.
Locked.
From the outside.
Mark rushed to it.
“Someone trapped us.”
Claire looked around.
“No.”
She pointed toward the files.
“They didn’t trap us.”
Everyone looked at her.
“They wanted us here.”
A cold silence filled the room.
Because they realized the truth.
Whoever was controlling everything wasn’t trying to hide the evidence.
They were leading them toward it.
Then the hidden room lights flickered.
A small speaker above them turned on.
A voice played.
Their father’s voice.
“If you’re hearing this…”
Everyone stopped.
The recording continued.
“Then I’m already gone.”
Laura covered her mouth.
“But if you found this room, it means you are finally ready to know what I spent my life protecting.”
A pause.
Then their father said:
“The biggest threat to this family was never outside.”
Static filled the room.
May you like
Then the final sentence:
“It was sitting at our dinner table.”
