Chapter 7 - MICHAEL’S DEATH WASN’T AN ACCIDENT

Marcus had kept the accident report because Michael had once hired him.

Another secret.

Another piece of my husband’s life I had never known.

Years earlier, Marcus helped Michael investigate sabotage at several development sites.

The official investigation went nowhere.

Then Michael died.

Marcus had kept copies.

Now someone wanted them gone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Michael asked me not to.”

“He was dead.”

“He was afraid you’d become a target.”

“I became one anyway.”

“Yes.”

That answer hurt because it was true.

We met Detective Elena Ruiz later that night.

The hospital psychiatrist had called her after discovering the falsified medical records.

Ruiz listened without interruption.

Then she asked Lily to describe the slap.

Daniel’s threat.

The overheard conversation.

Lily did.

Her voice shook only once.

Ruiz believed her.

I could tell.

But believing wasn’t enough.

“We need evidence that connects Daniel to the forged medical records and estate documents.”

Marcus placed Michael’s flash drive on the table.

“This might.”

Ruiz copied everything.

Then she opened one final folder we had missed.

It contained a video.

Michael appeared on screen.

He looked exhausted.

“If you’re seeing this, I was right about Daniel.”

I grabbed the edge of the table.

Michael leaned toward the camera.

“He isn’t working alone.”

Ruiz paused the video.

“Who?”

I swallowed.

“Play it.”

Michael continued.

Daniel Harper is the recruiter.

His mother handles introductions.

Robert handles the legal paper.

Dr. Shaw handles medical incapacity.

They target widows and older divorcees with valuable property.

They create relationships.

Marriage.

Power of attorney.

Guardianship.

Then they strip the estate.

Jenna whispered, “Jesus.”

Michael’s face hardened.

I found four prior victims.

Two died within a year of remarriage.

One disappeared into long-term psychiatric care.

The fourth lost custody of her son and later killed herself.

I covered Lily’s ears.

Too late.

Michael continued.

Daniel approached me because he needed the Walker property.

I refused.

Then he changed strategy.

If I die, he’ll probably approach Claire.

My eyes filled with tears.

He knew.

Michael knew exactly what might happen.

Then he said something that broke me.

Claire, if he makes you feel safe, that’s the trick.

He studies what people are missing.

Then he becomes it.

I cried silently.

Because that was exactly what Daniel had done.

I had been lonely.

Daniel became companionship.

I had been frightened about money.

Daniel became security.

I worried Lily needed a father.

Daniel became Dad.

Until Lily saw through him.

Ruiz stopped the video.

“We have enough for search warrants.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

But when police reached Daniel’s house, he was gone.

Margaret was gone.

Robert was gone.

Dr. Shaw had left Hawthorne.

Their phones were off.

Their accounts had already begun emptying.

They were running.

Then Ruiz’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

She looked at Lily.

“Someone just used Daniel Harper’s passport.”

“Where?”

“The airport.”

My heart jumped.

Ruiz shook her head.

“He isn’t leaving.”

“Then what?”

“He bought one child’s ticket.”

May you like

Lily went white.

And I realized Daniel had never planned to run without taking the one person who controlled my future.
