Chapter 12 - BENEATH THE HOUSE

We reached my house twenty minutes later.

Smoke was already pouring from the basement windows.

Margaret had set it on fire.

Firefighters entered.

Ruiz arrested her trying to escape through the backyard.

Even with soot on her face and handcuffs around her wrists, Margaret remained calm.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting,” she told me.

“My daughter.”

She smiled.

“No. The land.”

Firefighters found a steel hatch beneath the basement floor.

I had lived in that house for eleven years.

I never knew it existed.

The key from Unit 317 fit.

Below the hatch was a narrow concrete chamber.

Michael had hidden records there.

Original deeds.

Environmental reports.

Videos.

And one safe.

Inside were documents proving that Henry Walker’s old partners had knowingly buried toxic material beneath several development sites.

Michael had been trying to expose them.

Daniel’s group learned about it.

They realized control of my property could give them access to the last undisclosed evidence.

It was never only about stealing my house.

They wanted to destroy evidence worth hundreds of millions in lawsuits.

Ruiz looked at the files.

“This is bigger than Daniel.”

I knew.

Names appeared in the records.

Developers.

Lawyers.

A retired judge.

Local officials.

Michael had been murdered because he discovered it.

Daniel had targeted me because marriage was the easiest way inside the trust.

And Lily had become “the only problem” because Michael’s estate passed to her if I died.

I sat on the basement steps.

Everything hit at once.

My husband’s death.

My engagement.

The fake kindness.

The wedding.

Lily’s fear.

All of it had been engineered.

Lily sat beside me.

“I thought you’d pick him.”

My heart broke.

I turned to her.

“Why?”

“Because grown-ups always believe other grown-ups.”

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt more than anything Daniel had done.

“I should’ve listened.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I knew you were scared.”

She shrugged.

“I didn’t know how to explain it.”

I pulled her close.

“You never have to prove you’re scared to me again.”

She cried into my shoulder.

So did I.

Above us, firefighters moved through the ruined house.

Ruiz came downstairs.

“We found something else.”

She handed me a photograph.

Michael.

Daniel.

And a third man.

I recognized him instantly.

My father.

Thomas Bennett.

He had died when I was seventeen.

Except according to the date on the photograph…

He had been alive eight years after his supposed death.

I stared at Ruiz.

“That’s impossible.”

May you like

She looked toward the underground chamber.

“Apparently your family has been lying to you longer than Daniel has.”
