Chapter 13 - MY FATHER’S SECOND LIFE

My father had not died in a boating accident.

He had disappeared.

Henry helped him.

Years earlier, Thomas Bennett had been an accountant for the development consortium.

He discovered the illegal dumping.

When he threatened to expose it, men came after him.

Henry arranged a fake death to protect him.

My mother knew.

Michael eventually knew.

I did not.

“Why keep it from me?”

Ruiz showed me a letter.

Because Thomas was still alive.

Living under another name.

And Michael had met him shortly before his own death.

The man in the photograph wasn’t Daniel’s partner.

He was Daniel’s target.

Ruiz located him through federal witness-protection contacts.

Two days later, I sat across from my father in a secure government building.

He was seventy-one.

Older.

Thinner.

But his eyes were the same.

“Claire.”

I didn’t hug him.

I couldn’t.

“You let me bury you.”

His face collapsed.

“I know.”

“I was seventeen.”

“I know.”

“Mom cried for years.”

“She knew.”

I stared.

“What?”

“She knew.”

Another betrayal.

Another secret.

My mother had died six years later without ever telling me.

My father wiped his eyes.

“We thought silence kept you safe.”

“It didn’t.”

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“It didn’t.”

Lily watched him cautiously.

He smiled.

“You have Michael’s eyes.”

She softened a little.

Thomas gave prosecutors the final evidence they needed.

He had records showing Margaret began laundering money for the consortium decades earlier.

Daniel and Robert inherited the operation.

Dr. Shaw joined later.

Michael threatened everything.

So they killed him.

The construction supervisor had been bribed.

The support cable had been intentionally weakened.

Daniel didn’t push Michael.

He paid someone else to make gravity do it for him.

When I learned that, I didn’t scream.

I didn’t cry.

I simply sat very still.

Because rage that deep has no sound.

Daniel’s arraignment occurred three days later.

He looked perfect in court.

Calm.

Clean suit.

Hair combed.

He smiled when he saw me.

Then his attorney approached Marcus.

“There’s an offer.”

“What offer?”

“Daniel will reveal every remaining participant if Claire agrees to one condition.”

I almost laughed.

“What?”

His attorney looked at Lily.

“Daniel wants all charges involving the child removed.”

“No.”

“Claire—”

“No.”

Daniel stared at me from across the courtroom.

Then he mouthed something.

I couldn’t hear it.

But I understood.

You still don’t know everything.

That night, Marcus received an anonymous package.

Inside was a video.

Recorded the morning of my wedding.

Daniel sat in front of the camera.

“If Claire walks away from the ceremony, initiate Plan B.”

A man off-camera asked,

“And the girl?”

May you like

Daniel smiled.

“Make it look like the mother did it.”
