Chapter 9 - Lily Speaks

Allison slept for fourteen hours.

When she woke, she was inside a secure medical room beneath the courthouse.

Brooks sat beside her.

No restraints.

No locked door.

No medication line.

She stared at the ceiling.

“Is this another facility?”

“No.”

“Are you a doctor?”

“Sometimes.”

“That is not an answer.”

Brooks smiled faintly.

“It is the best one I have.”

Allison turned her head.

“Where is Colonel Voss?”

“Talking to his daughter.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Lily survived?”

“Yes.”

Allison began crying.

Brooks handed her water.

She held the cup with both hands.

“I tried to warn her.”

“What happened?”

Allison closed her eyes.

“The same thing that happened to me.”

Lily sat at a metal table with Daniel.

The swelling around her eyes had begun to fade.

Her jaw remained wired.

Chen had provided a tablet that converted typed words into speech.

Lily hated the artificial voice.

Daniel hated that she needed it.

She typed slowly.

I remember more.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Only tell me what you can.”

Her fingers paused.

Then continued.

Professor Mercer contacted me two weeks ago.

He said my research had uncovered a pattern inside Whitmore Defense data.

Payments hidden inside physics grants.

Shipments that did not match the experiments.

Daniel looked at Chen.

He was recording every word.

Lily typed again.

Mercer told me not to trust the university.

He asked me to meet him near the science building.

When I arrived, he was afraid.

He gave me the paper with the three names.

He said they had hurt someone before.

“Allison,” Daniel said.

Lily nodded.

He told me to follow him because the cameras were already compromised.

Then Tyler appeared.

Her hands began shaking.

Daniel covered them with his own.

“You can stop.”

She pulled away.

Not angrily.

Determined.

No.

I need to finish.

She continued.

Ethan grabbed my backpack.

Brandon held my arms.

Tyler demanded the ledger.

I said I did not have it.

Mercer tried to help me.

Daniel felt the room grow colder.

“What did they do to him?”

Lily looked at the screen for a long time.

A man came from the building.

Older.

Silver hair.

He told Mercer he should have stayed dead.

Vale.

Daniel already knew.

Hearing it from Lily made the knowledge heavier.

Mercer told me to run.

I reached the west entrance.

Tyler caught me.

Her breathing became uneven.

Daniel wanted to stop the interview.

But Lily kept typing.

They hit me.

I fell.

Brandon told them it was enough.

Ethan laughed.

Tyler said his father would erase everything.

Tears moved down her cheeks.

Then Vale said I had seen too much.

He told them to kill me.

Daniel looked away for one second.

Only one.

It was enough for Lily to see the rage in his face.

She touched his wrist.

He looked back.

Daddy.

The artificial voice sounded empty.

The word did not.

“I’m here.”

Do not become him.

Daniel stared at her.

“Become who?”

The man they think you are.

The room became silent.

For nineteen years, Daniel had believed he protected Lily by hiding the Ghost Colonel.

Now she was asking him to remain her father.

Not a weapon.

Not an executioner.

A father.

He squeezed her hand.

“I promise.”

She studied his face.

Then typed one final sentence.

Mercer hid the real ledger inside me.

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Lily pointed to the small scar behind her left ear.

A scar Daniel had believed came from the attack.

Brooks entered immediately.

He examined it.

“This incision is recent.”

Chen scanned the area with a portable medical reader.

A tiny foreign object appeared beneath the skin.

A micro-storage capsule.

Mercer had placed it there before the attack.

Perhaps while pretending to clean a wound.

Perhaps without telling her because knowledge would have made her a greater target.

Brooks removed it carefully.

The device was smaller than a grain of rice.

Chen connected it to an isolated terminal.

One file appeared.

No documents.

No financial records.

Only a video.

Mercer appeared on the screen.

This recording was different.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Colonel Voss.”

Daniel’s body went still.

Mercer had made the message specifically for him.

“If Lily survived, then you found this.”

“I am sorry I used her.”

“I had no other choice.”

“Vale monitors every digital network.”

“He controls officials, contractors, police departments, and military commands.”

“But there is one thing he does not control.”

“Your memory.”

Mercer raised an old mission photograph.

Task Force Specter stood outside a ruined monastery in Bosnia.

Operation Iron Chapel.

“Vale did not create Specter to destroy the Directorate.”

“He created Specter to eliminate his rivals inside it.”

“Every mission you completed made him more powerful.”

Daniel felt Reyes step closer.

Mercer continued.

“The Archive you protected does not contain the whole truth.”

“It contains the version Vale wanted you to preserve.”

“The real record is hidden in the mission you were ordered never to remember.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

Reyes noticed.

“What mission?”

Mercer answered from the screen.

“Project Lazarus.”

The name struck Daniel like a physical blow.

Images flashed through his mind.

A concrete room.

A child crying.

Vale standing behind glass.

A gun in Daniel’s hand.

Then nothing.

A blank space where memory should have been.

Mercer’s face moved closer.

“Vale erased part of your memory nineteen years ago.”

“He did not allow you to retire.”

“He released you.”

“Lily was never the reason you left Specter.”

“She was the reason you survived what he did afterward.”

The video ended.

Daniel stared at the dark screen.

Reyes spoke carefully.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Do you remember Lazarus?”

Daniel pressed one hand against the table.

Fragments returned.

Snow.

A medical facility.

Specter operators restrained by their own allies.

Vale giving an order.

Someone screaming Daniel’s real name.

Then another image.

A woman holding a newborn child.

Lily’s mother.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

A terrible possibility formed.

Lily was nineteen.

Project Lazarus happened nineteen years ago.

Chen saw the dates first.

He opened Lily’s birth record.

Then Daniel’s retirement file.

Then the classified mission timeline.

All three occurred within the same seventy-two-hour period.

Reyes stared at the screen.

“That cannot be a coincidence.”

An alarm sounded from the communications station.

Chen turned.

Every major news network had interrupted its programming.

General Marcus Vale appeared on camera.

Not as the Director.

As a decorated former military adviser who had supposedly lived overseas after surviving a classified accident.

He stood beside Senator Evelyn Hale.

Behind them were photographs of Daniel Voss.

Burned villages.

Dead civilians.

Secret detention sites.

Evidence taken from the false Specter Archive.

Vale faced the cameras.

“Colonel Daniel Voss is a dangerous fugitive.”

“He has abducted multiple civilians.”

“He has attacked American companies.”

“He is responsible for acts of terrorism committed across three continents.”

Daniel watched the nation meet the Ghost Colonel for the first time.

Vale continued.

“His daughter, Lily Walker, may be under his control.”

“We ask the public to help bring her home safely.”

A photograph of Lily appeared on screen.

Then Daniel’s current address.

His business.

His vehicles.

The faces of Brooks, Kane, Chen, and Reyes.

Task Force Specter had been exposed.

Outside the courthouse, sirens began approaching from every direction.

Federal vehicles.

Police units.

Military helicopters.

Vale had turned the entire country against them.

Reyes looked toward Daniel.

“We have maybe five minutes.”

Daniel watched his daughter’s face on television.

Vale had stolen the truth.

Weaponized it.

And made Daniel the monster.

Lily typed on her tablet.

What do we do now?

Daniel picked up the black challenge coin.

On one side was the silver skull.

On the other were the words that had brought his family back together.

SPECTER NEVER DIES.

May you like

He closed his fist around it.

“Now we find out what happened the day you were born.”
