Chapter 1 - The Ghost Wakes

The phone call lasted less than three minutes.
It was all Major Reyes needed.
By the time Daniel Walker hung up, encrypted messages had already begun crossing satellites, private servers, and forgotten military channels that officially no longer existed.
Men who had disappeared into ordinary lives suddenly received one sentence.
The Colonel has called.
Brooks was repairing fishing boats on the Oregon coast.
Chen owned a cybersecurity company in Seattle.
Kane trained federal K-9 units outside Denver.
None of them hesitated.
Within forty-eight hours, every one of them was moving.
Not because of duty.
Because of a promise made nineteen years earlier.
"If one of us calls, we all answer."
Daniel remained beside Lily's hospital bed until sunrise.
Machines hummed softly around her.
Every breath she took sounded like a battle.
The surgeon entered quietly.
"She's stable."
Daniel nodded.
"Will she recover?"
"Physically..."
The doctor paused.
"I believe so."
"But emotionally..."
He didn't finish.
He didn't have to.
Daniel already understood.
When the doctor left, Lily slowly opened one swollen eye.
She couldn't speak through the wires holding her jaw together.
Instead, she reached weakly toward the bedside table.
Daniel handed her a pen.
Her fingers shook as she wrote three uneven words on a hospital notepad.
They weren't alone.
Daniel stared at the page.
"What do you mean?"
Lily closed her eyes.
Another sentence.
Someone watched.
Before he could ask another question, exhaustion pulled her back to sleep.
Daniel carefully folded the paper into his pocket.
His instincts screamed the same warning they had whispered during combat missions.
The three boys weren't the entire story.
Someone else had been there.
Someone important.
Outside the hospital, a black SUV rolled quietly into the parking garage.
Major Reyes stepped out first.
His hair had turned gray.
His posture had not.
Behind him came Brooks.
Then Chen.
Then Kane.
For the first time in nearly two decades, Task Force Specter stood together again.
No uniforms.
No rank insignia.
Just old soldiers answering an old promise.
Reyes looked at Daniel.
"You look older."
Daniel almost smiled.
"So do you."
Brooks glanced toward Lily's room.
"How bad?"
Daniel handed him the X-rays.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Finally Kane clenched his fists.
"Whoever did this..."
Daniel interrupted him.
"We don't move until we know everything."
Chen opened a hardened laptop on the hood of the SUV.
"I've already started."
He typed rapidly.
"The university says every camera near the science building failed."
Brooks frowned.
"All of them?"
"Every single one."
Kane laughed once.
A cold laugh.
"Cameras don't all fail."
"They're made to fail."
Chen nodded.
"Exactly."
He rotated the screen.
"There was a cyberattack."
"Professional."
"Military-grade."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"College kids don't erase digital evidence like that."
"No."
Chen looked up.
"They hire someone who can."
Silence settled over the garage.
This case had just become much bigger than three wealthy students.
Daniel closed the laptop.

"We're not hunting boys anymore."
"We're hunting whoever believes they're untouchable."
