Chapter 11 - Ghost Protocol

Kane fired into the ceiling vent.
The first shot bent the grate.
The second knocked it loose.
Gas continued pouring into the corridor.
Brooks tore open his medical bag.
“Filters.”
He handed masks to Lily and Allison first.
Then to the others.
Daniel covered his mouth with one arm.
“How long?”
“Minutes if the concentration rises.”
Chen connected his terminal to a wall panel.
“They isolated the control network.”
“Can you break it?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Longer than minutes.”
Daniel looked at the photographs.
Project Lazarus.
His face.
Sarah’s face.
Children without names.
The facility had been designed as a maze.
Vale wanted them moving.
Wanted Daniel separated.
Wanted him following a path created nineteen years earlier.
That meant one route would remain open.
Daniel walked toward the far wall.
A steel panel unlocked as he approached.
Reyes saw it.
“It recognizes you.”
Daniel stepped through.
“Then follow me.”
The corridor beyond remained free of gas.
The others entered.
The door sealed behind them.
Vale’s voice came through hidden speakers.
“You always were good at understanding structure.”
Daniel kept walking.
“You always talked too much.”
“Still angry?”
“Still hiding?”
Vale laughed.
“I am not hiding.”
“You are speaking through walls.”
The corridor divided.
One path led toward medical laboratories.
The other toward central records.
Daniel stopped.
Lily pointed to the floor.
Tiny arrows had been scratched into the concrete.
Not printed.
Cut by hand.
The marks formed the same pattern she had used earlier.
Not live.
Sarah had left them.
Daniel followed the arrows toward the laboratories.
Vale’s voice changed.
“You should choose the records wing.”
Daniel continued in the opposite direction.
“I already know you lie.”
“You do not know what Sarah became.”
“I know what she chose.”
That silenced Vale for several seconds.
The laboratory doors opened.
Inside were rows of medical chairs.
Restraints hung from the arms.
Monitors remained dark.
Daniel remembered the room.
Not as a complete image.
As pain.
White light.
Vale asking questions.
A needle entering his neck.
Someone ordering him to forget.
He gripped the edge of a table.
Lily touched his arm.
He looked at her.
She typed:
Stay here.
The artificial voice sounded cold.
Her eyes did not.
Daniel breathed slowly.
The memory passed.
Brooks examined the equipment.
“This was advanced for nineteen years ago.”
Chen accessed a local terminal.
“It has been updated.”
“How recently?”
“Six months.”
The facility was still active.
Kane found fresh footprints near a side door.
“We are not alone.”
Daniel moved first.
The next chamber contained twelve glass rooms.
Eleven were empty.
One held a man strapped upright to a chair.
Professor Adrian Mercer.
Alive.
His beard had grown.
Bruises covered his face.
A breathing tube ran beneath his nose.
Allison ran toward the glass.
“Dad.”
Mercer lifted his head.
His eyes found her.
For a moment, he did not understand.
Then his entire body shook.
“Allison?”
She pressed both hands against the barrier.
“I am here.”
Mercer began crying.
The reunion lasted less than five seconds before an alarm sounded.
Vale’s voice returned.
“Touching.”
Daniel studied the room.
Mercer’s chair sat on a pressure platform.
Wires ran beneath it.
“Do not open the door,” Chen warned.
“Explosive trigger.”
Allison turned.
“No.”
Mercer looked at Daniel through the glass.
“He wants the Archive.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is the override?”
“There is none.”
“Everything has one.”
“Not this.”
Mercer glanced toward Lily.
“She has Elena’s eyes.”
Lily stood beside Daniel.
Her hands trembled.
Mercer forced himself to speak.
“Your mother tried to destroy Lazarus.”
“She altered Daniel’s treatment.”
“She blocked the final command.”
“What command?” Daniel asked.
Mercer looked at him.
“To return.”
The room fell silent.
Vale had not released Daniel out of mercy.
Lazarus had implanted a trigger designed to bring him back.
A phrase.
A sound.
An image.
Something that could reactivate the Ghost Colonel when needed.
“Why did it fail?” Reyes asked.
“Elena replaced the trigger.”
“With what?”
Mercer stared at Lily.
“Her.”
Daniel understood slowly.
Sarah had connected his deepest loyalty to his daughter.
Vale could not command him.
Only Lily could reach the part Lazarus had rebuilt.
That was why Vale needed her.
Not merely as leverage.
As a key.
A door opened behind them.
Armed men entered from both sides.
Kane and Reyes took cover.
Gunfire shattered monitors.
Daniel pulled Lily behind a steel console.
Brooks protected Allison.
Chen crawled toward the electrical controls.
Vale’s men advanced in disciplined lines.
Not police.
Not military.
Directorate cells.
Daniel counted the timing of their shots.
He remembered training some of those patterns himself.
“Left side reloads every six seconds,” he said.
Kane nodded.
“Right side rotates on four.”
Reyes smiled grimly.
“They are using our doctrine.”
“Then they already lost.”
Daniel signaled.
Kane fired at the lights.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Reyes moved through the left flank.
Daniel crossed the center.
Brooks triggered the fire suppression system.
White vapor filled the chamber.
The Directorate soldiers lost visual contact.
Specter did not.
They had spent years fighting in darkness before these men learned to hold rifles.
One by one, the attackers fell.
No executions.
No wasted force.
Only removal.
When the lights returned, the room was silent.
Chen reached the platform controls.
“I found the pressure circuit.”
“Can you disable it?”
“Maybe.”
Allison looked at her father.
Mercer shook his head.
“No time.”
“Do not say that.”
“They will send more.”
“We are not leaving you.”
Mercer smiled weakly.
“I spent three years trying to reach you.”
“Let me do one thing right.”
Allison struck the glass.
“You do not get to leave again.”
Mercer closed his eyes.
Daniel knew the expression.
A man who had already made peace with a decision no one else could accept.
Daniel approached the barrier.
“I will get her out.”
Mercer opened his eyes.
“I know.”
“Where is the Directorate’s central archive?”
“Below us.”
“How do we reach it?”
“Vale will take you.”
Daniel looked toward the camera.
“Then we give him what he wants.”
Reyes understood.
“No.”
“He needs me alive.”
“He also needs Lily.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“She stays with you.”
Lily began typing.
Daniel covered the screen with his hand.
“No argument.”
She pulled the tablet away.
You cannot stop the trigger without me.
“I am not letting him use you.”
He already is.
She turned the screen toward everyone.
He attacked me because he needed you to return.
Everything led here.
I am part of this whether you allow it or not.
Daniel wanted to deny it.
The facts would not let him.
Lily stepped close enough that he could see the bruises beneath her eyes.
She typed more slowly.
Trust me like you trust them.
Daniel looked at Reyes.
Brooks.
Kane.
Chen.
Men he had trusted with his life.
Lily deserved more than protection.
She deserved the truth.
And trust.
Daniel nodded once.
“We go together.”
Vale’s voice filled the room.
“Finally.”
A door opened behind Mercer’s chamber.
An elevator waited.
Daniel looked at the team.
“Ghost Protocol.”
The words changed them.
Not physically.
Not visibly.
But the old unit returned completely.
Ghost Protocol had been created for one situation.
Capture by a superior force.
The team would appear divided.
One member would surrender.
The rest would disappear inside the enemy’s structure.
Then destroy it from within.
Reyes lowered his weapon.
Brooks pulled Allison away from the glass.
Chen copied the facility map.
Kane collected equipment from the fallen soldiers.
Daniel and Lily entered the elevator alone.
Before the doors closed, Daniel looked at Reyes.
No words.
None needed.
Specter never required complete orders.
Only trust.
The elevator descended twelve floors.
Lily stood beside Daniel.
No guards.
No restraints.
Vale knew escape was impossible.
The doors opened into a circular command center.
Screens covered every wall.
Cities.
Military installations.
Government buildings.
Financial markets.
Police networks.
The Directorate did not observe the country.
It operated inside its nervous system.
Vale waited near the center.
Charles Whitmore stood beside him.
Senator Hale stood on the other side.
Victor Cole remained near the rear.
The three families.
The parents behind the sons.
The power behind the cover-up.
Vale smiled.
“You brought the key.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“She is not a key.”
“She is the correction Elena inserted into you.”
Vale approached Lily.
Daniel moved between them.
Vale stopped.
“Still the father.”
“Always.”
Vale turned toward the screens.
“You think I ordered those boys to attack her because she found a ledger.”
“You did.”
“No.”
Vale looked at Charles.
“Mr. Whitmore ordered them to recover Mercer’s evidence.”
Charles stiffened.
Vale continued.
“I allowed the assault because pain would force you to awaken.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You used her.”
“I tested the protocol.”
“You broke a nineteen-year-old girl to test me.”
“I sacrificed one person to restore the finest operator this country ever produced.”
Lily typed.
You failed.
Vale read the screen.
“Did I?”
He activated a recording.
Sarah appeared.
Not from the old tape.
From the night she died.
She sat inside a car.
Blood covered one side of her face.
“Marcus knows Daniel cannot be controlled while Lily lives.”
“I am taking her away.”
“If I fail, tell Daniel the final trigger is not a phrase.”
“It is grief.”
The recording ended.
Daniel felt cold spread through his body.
Vale watched carefully.
“Elena understood you.”
“She knew loss would awaken everything Lazarus buried.”
Daniel saw Sarah’s funeral.
Lily crying at three years old.
His own emptiness.
The years of nightmares.
Vale had not killed Lily because he did not need her dead yet.
He needed Daniel to believe he could lose her.
Enough pain.
Enough fear.
Enough rage.
The Ghost Colonel would return.
Vale stepped closer.
“And now he has.”
Daniel looked at his hands.
Memories flooded back.
Missions.
Names.
Faces.
Orders.
The full Specter Archive.
Not stored in a vault.
Not hidden on a drive.
Encoded inside his reconstructed memory.
Daniel was the Archive.
May you like
Vale smiled.
“Welcome back, Colonel.”
